Great timing for this post - I was just going over the importance of getting into the customers minds with a coworker earlier today. Its too easy to look at KW tools and think we know what people are searching for - thats not always the case. These are some great suggestions for unearthing the words that are actually used to search for a clients products/services.
Instead of getting hands on with the customers a less obtrusive method is to get your client to setup analytics if they are already ranking for terms, and if they are not get them to setup analytics and do a PPC campaign targetting some of the keywords for a month. This way you will see what the customer wants by what converts ;)
Funny and true. But do not treat people like "tools".

These 3 are indeed pretty uncommon to be used as a keyword research tool..anyways thanks for giving us an idea.
