Microsoft has said that between "2 and 10 percent" of site searches lead to a 404 error page. The company thus decided to create what it's calling the "Web Page Error Toolkit."

Just say No.

I hope this is double opt-in,  opt-in from the webmaster allowing the action by placing a tag on the site to opt-in, and opt-in from the user of the browser.

Hey, this could be useful.

But I would like to see other search engines take on the 2 to 10 percent leading to 404 errors.  If they don't then offering this could be a sign that their search isn't up to scratch to begin with.  However... if they are offering me the option of a custom site search as a 404 then it's a great option.

Running ads on it would not be!  Lets face it, I don't want to have gone through the hard work of driving traffic to the website (granted the found a 404 error) only to have someone buy them from me.
