Interesting article with some intriguing notions. Its true that most people wont read much of your content and the overall look and feel will have as much of an impact, but I disagree that words are not an experience. Words are the only way we have to shape and define anything and the words we choose determine how people will view and understand that experience. Think of the difference you imply when you offer a "budget" service as opposed to a "cheap" one. Choose the wrong words and you miss your target audience entirely, or worse, convey the opposite of what you meant.
Mindy - point taken, I do have to say I was a bit shaky about that section of the entire thing -- because I have written and read things that simply by themselves have brought tears to peoples eyes, or laughter in their hearts. Posts on a bulletin board that are nothing BUT words that paint a picture ... I think the choice of words is hugely important, but I am a strong proponent to keep the basket full of other things as well. All in all, it is really a continually shifting paradigm, that is true.Mugambo -- I 100% agree with you that words keep people engaged in the long run. Getting them to look is a kicker. The thing that I didnt touch on with this -- when it comes to SEO -- words ARE it. "Pretty sites" dont come up higher in the SERPS, ay? :D I was trying to find the "pretty site" google check box and it just wasnt there. heh hehWhat prompted me to write this - my son was asking me why everyone is always so worried about what people look like. We had a long discussion about segregation and pre-concieved ideals. The instant judgement that we have, even when we are aware that we are not even close to being qualified to be that judge. It got me thinking, wheels turning and such. Pretty heavy conversation for a 7-year-old, but he held his own. I was mightily impressed with his staunch stand. My baby, not so much of a baby these days.
