I especially think that the math behind "those two people who manually check their rankings three times a week" is very illuminating when it comes to monthly search volume reports. Nothing new, but these issues are always worth reviewing and expounding upon.

First, why doesn’t search engine watch allow me to comment?  C’mon guys.  Secondly.  I disagree with the idea that high volume search terms should not be used as a key performance indicator in seo campaigns.   Thinking that way, IMO, undermines the value that those white whale terms have in regards to Branding.  It is a mistake, I agree, to judge the effectiveness of an SEO campaign based solely upon a few major keywords, but it is also a mistake to neglect them or deny their impact. A metric that I find useful is the number of searches for my domain or brand over time.  I find, pretty frequently, that as rankings increase, so do the number of searches for a given site.  I find this is the case especially when I harpoon a whale.
