Good article - Mostly agree Todd, but would you really recommend staying away from hyphens altogether?
I can point out several instances where my own lack of foresight in registering a domain name without a hyphen has proven to be a mistake, and one that's pretty embarrassing...
- sorry - no more details here ;)
As google seems focused on making sure navigational searchers are satisfied, this is going to become more of a thing, do me a favor and put something of value on the domain, please. I hate those sites with an entire page of adsense.
Searchcommander...a domain with a hyphen in it will be valued much less by a purchaser who is a "classic" domainer. If you are building out the site and plan to hold onto it or are planning to sell it as a business with recurring revenue, the hyphen in the domain will matter much less.
LocalHound...many will argue that relevant ads are meeting the needs of the visitor. Better a parking page than a low quality "placeholder" article IMO.
"Predictive SEO" and the $8.00 purchase has worked well for me. Good tips.
In taking a PURE domainers stance, I would value a domain with a hyphen only if it received traffic or was a wildly popular keyphrase.
A domainer would look at a domain name and give it value only based on the direct navigation traffic or "type-in" traffic because they are looking at the revenue stream that it provides. While an SEO looks at a domain from a development stand point. Both sides like brandability. Luckily SEOs and domainers are getting together and brining the best of both worlds, direct navigation and search engine traffic.
Great article.
hyphen domain are pretty much trash
