You’re right about the lowercase g. When it’s blown up big, it is a unique and interesting character. But as a favicon, it loses all of that and, in my browser, looks more like the number 8. The capital G was easier to identify at a glance. And isn’t that the purpose of the icon?

Yeah, the new one sucks. I just went ahead and submitted the old favicon as my "idea." I really just want them to go back to the old one. I probably shouldn’t care as much as I do, but I think changing the favicon was a really bad move by Google’s branding/marketing team.
