Please spare me.... Made For Sphinn Contents
You may say lets give Sphinn some time. But I'm already fed up and tiered of people submitting poor contents under category "News Story". Several times I followed those links to end up with very poor content or lets be more honest and call it junk.
That contents reminds me of Made For Adsense Contents. Now we have a new type of junk; Made For Sphinn Contents.
And I'm not going to mention examples. You can just look around under category "News Story" and see for yourself.

I will say "give Sphinn a chance". I think I've just see the first case of Sphinn spam. It was bound to happen.
That's not the point, though.
I think the point is whether Sphinn builds a good online community which collectively does well at sphinning the good content and interesting news - and ignoring the phish.
Right now, as Sphinn's so new, we don't have that community and therefore we don't yet have that voting system/self correcting system that's needed to sort good contributions from the bad.

I wish you are right that things would get better with time regarding Sphinn spam.
Moreover one might expect, for example, that a post under "News Story" would link to a story not older than a week. Otherwise we will end reading yesterdays papers ;-)
Yeah. I think you're right but I also think people will learn that old news is ignored news. If you want to make the headlines then the news needs to be fresh, fresh, fresh!
Also - as/if/when the site picks up there will be less need to go checking what the new sphinns are as there will be a steady stream of hot sphinns. Hopefully this means you'll see old news less.
Hopefully :)

Your point is well taken. But I think you might be better served by paying attention to the category as well as the type. We have several categories here that people can post into that will not be news items per se.
If a post is not a new discussion, but links to an item off site, it will show as a "new story" type - no way for the system to differentiate news links from more water cooler type story links - thus, the categories. We are watching the categories things get posted into, and making adjustments as needed. We've also posted guidelines that recommend against posting old news, and are keeping an eye on that.
Ultimately, we'll have to see how the community shapes its network, and I do think people will want to report the latest info, and the best items will rise to the top. We're just getting started here, stick around a bit and see where it goes.
A few thoughts. On the wishlist, I hope to have a "Via" link, so that people will be encouraged to link to their own blog or a blog references a news source. I'm hoping this will remove some incentive to route people through a blog or site that isn't adding value. The submission guidelines already speak to this and offer a workaround, of course.
Second, so far I've been impressed that some of these get into What's New but don't get Sphunn up. The system so far is kind of working.
Slightly longer term, it might be that we limit new members with no track record to submitting on per day, to help them not hit What's New with irrelevant stuff.
Michelle and Danny,
Thanks for taking the time to comment. Much appreciated. Hopefully things will keep moving in the right direction as you mentioned.
In general I'm very happy to see that search geeks have found a home at last; Sphinn!
Keep up the good work.
i think any kind of news/ content that may find appealing can be classifield as news as any kind of concrete content generation is the cornerstone of any website
