Love him or hate him.... MM does make some damn fine posts and I agree with much of this!!

- SEO Theory and Analysis Blog - Do people really think that sneaky redirects and buying links are advanced search engine optimization? What utter crap and nonsense!

People who rely on links for their search engine optimization had better be doing it only because they cannot change the content they are trying to rank. Linking is the worst possible way to optimize for search because it’s inefficient and the return on investment sucks.

It truly is - I eventually stopped forum lurking because all folks seem to do is tell people to 'build links' - and that is certainly not even close to having Skillz in SEO. Link building is probably the most time consuming, low ROI activity that there is in SEO. The greater care taken in the other segments of the discipline, the less reliant one is on the links - THIS is the true ART of SEO... IMO of course ;0)

Oh dear, some people just don't get it. A good "Black Hat" affiliate will usually make a perfect White Hat site and then use so-called "Black Hat" tactics to promote it. It's not like we stick up a Flash site and then cloak it over to some warez page or anything.

My affiliate sites are a beautiful work of art in terms of site architecture etc, although they rank because of the paid links and blog networks. They've never been banned because they look perfectly White Hat, even to a human reviewer.

For clients, I'm as white as white. I don't use "Black Hat" as I have the budget and brand to use other methods.

"Buying or selling links that pass PageRank is in violation of Google's webmaster guidelines and can negatively impact a site's ranking in search results." :-)

1) Go to Google and type "loans"

2) Look at the link profile for moneyexpert

3) Tell me if you think they are a natural 23,000,000 backlinks

4) Ask why they are ranking in a million dollar search position...

Is it because of the beautifully sculpted nofollow? No, it's because they're scamming the hell out of the link system.

markdigerati,

If what you wrote is correct. I'm just wondering. Why haven't you reported the said site to Google WebSpam Team?

How to report paid links

So, in conclusion, advanced white hat SEO is creating content...

LOL this post is very funny. Have any of you ever been inside of the world of blackhat seo? Blackhat seo is about so many things most of you guys don't even know exist. I suggest you watch the seo contest on www.shoutingzone.com and see what real blackhat is about. For example: My entry blog has been hacked. Some changes were made in the .htaccess to keep the one post about the contest from being spidered. Many other things you can learn over there.
Not saying you should or shouldn't get into blackhat, but what the industry is really about is defacing competitors sites, getting "fake links", cookie stuffing and such. Many of the members make 6 figures a month with that. And if you think that what they do is easy, you have to learn a lot more.

Hmm, "Black Hat" SEO is not the same as Black Hat Hacking. I used to do a little White Hat Hacking (penetration testing), although I would never hack a site without being asked. Comment spamming is not hacking as they're asking you to comment, .htaccess hacking is too dark for me and not worth the risks. Less risky stuff is much more financially viable. Cookie stuffing and XSS, well that's not technically hacking.

Let's face it, the kind of blogs you guys call blackhat like the ones here
http://www.searchenginejournal.com/seo-black-hat-best-black-hat-seo-blog-of-2006/4203/
don't really scratch the surface of what is being done in the blackhat world.
Link building, which by the way every "white hat" does is something far too tame to even mention amongst those who trick Google with much more sohphisticated methods. I have recently started interviewing on of the "real blackhats" who does not share some tips for blackhat fame. He does it!

Blackhat hacking is as much a part of blackhat and link building is a part of white hat seo.
