Internet marketing, and more specifically search marketing, can be broken down into 3 major components: search engine optimization (SEO), paid search (PPC), and social media optimization (SMO). The problem that I see in the search industry is that many of the most influential players focus on only one of these components and shut themselves off from the others. The truth is that as the Internet matures, it will become increasingly important to integrate all three components into a marketing campaign in order to see success online.

I agree that for the best results a company needs to cover all three avenues of Internet marketing - SEO, PPC & SMO. For the longest time the "double play" (SEO & PPC) was the defacto approach to Internet marketing and worked great.

With the addition of SMO I saw Search Professionals having to make a crucial business decision. Either diversify and spend time learning SMO or specialize and provide the best SEO or PPC management service they can.

Personally, I specialized in organics and filled the void by forming strategic partnerships to cover PPC and SMO. This way I can give the clients what they want from three different dedicated professionals and not having to worry about being the best at all three.
