I have to agree wholeheartedly that SMX Advanced 2008 was a great educational experience in Black Hat, Grey Hat, and White Hat techniques.
Even if you don’t agree, or ever use any of the methods discussed it is invaluable to know that they are out there and being actively used.
I’m an In-House for a large company and none of the Black Hat techniques would ever be considered… However, we have affiliates and I’m sure they use them. To not know what may be used for or against you is asking for trouble.
Danny did us a service by including various hat colors; he broadened our education in SEO/SEM.
Yahoo, MSN and Google all had their spam teams in the audience for most of the sessions, they admitted as much and everyone saw Matt, and they still have the utmost respect for Danny and the SMX Advanced conference, why should we think less of him and it.
I personally mentioned to Danny that while we can’t use any of the Black Hat techniques we were very glad to have them presented.

By the way this is my first Sphinn so please go easy.

Stephan, not only were you the best presenter at the conference, you’ve done a terrific job at condensing a week-long argument into a perfect 500-word synopsis.

As a white hat, I think it’s part of my job to understand what black hats are doing. At the least I want to make sure black hats aren’t sabotaging my clients. The only way to know is to be aware of what to look for. That being said, I think sessions should be divided into "white hat/no risk tactics" and "black hat/riskier tactics."  If they are clearly labeled there won’t be any confusion or people feeling like they are being misguided. I think there should definitely be room for black hats in an advanced conference. It’s all about the yin and yang.
