You need to wait until the page is fully loaded, or you will get a Javascript error. If the site is slow, this can take some time. To see the errors in FF, type "javascript:" (without the quotes) in the Location box, and hit Enter.
Danny, if you read this, may I make a suggestion? What if you were to actually load the Sphinning link *inside* the same script that holds the vote functionality? Put a placeholder there and replace it with the actual link once the script loads. I would be more than willing to tweak your script to do this, if you like, as it would only take me about 10-15 minutes to do. Let me know.
I'm sure I've waited fully on many occasions so don't think that is the issue.
Interesting though, thanks for the response
It took me several days to realise that you need to click on the words and not the graphic, but that topic has already been covered elsewhere on this site.
@mvandemar, may very well come back to you on that. We're meeting tomorrow to go over a big change to the button anyway, as part of bringing the site out of beta and letting comments flow off of it.
I've noticed this same issue too. Let's see what happens with the move out of beta!
Have not noticed errors clicking to sphinn but have seen a few others on page loads. BTW: noticed a bunch of china related spam last night which was cleaned up quickly. Should we be contacting anyone if and when posts like that appear?
@planetc1 - I happened to be online and looking over the new submissions when that happened last night so was able to stop that user and remove the submissions straight away. In general, we've got really great coverage by the moderators here, and with Rob coming on as editor next week, there will be even more. There will also be a moderator page coming up in the next week or so with specific contact info for these and other issues.
It never hurts to drop a line to webmaster at sphinn however, if you see some obvious spam that isn't removed within a timely fashion, or are experiencing significant technical problems on the site.
What's the difference between a Moderator and an Editor?
Mods volunteer their time and help out when they can primarily to kill spam, do occasional edits to story titles and help guide new users when they don't understand submission guidelines. As editor, Rob's job is to oversee the mods and run the site in general, such as new feature development.
Heh. Putting the monkey in charge of the organ grinders! LOL
Best of luck Rob.
@Danny - just drop me an email if you decide to.
Btw, I'm talking just about the vote link, not the counter button, which can still preload. While it's loading you could have it say "Initializing Sphengine" (Sphinn-engine, get it? :P) or some such, instead of "Sphinn It" or "Sphunn".
I have to wait until the page is fully loaded too, took me a couple of sphinns to work that out :)
Just NOW realized that the page has to fully load. Now the lightbulb goes on.
... or just "sphinning up"....
ERROR: You have already voted for this article
Yes I have the same issue here...
Hmm OK this is starting to make sense
I guess me and Donna are the same on this one haha
