the only thing missing was information regarding using the base tag. i’d like to know if that would be the equivalent of using absolute links?

The base tag can help quite a lot. It resolves internal links to the correct domain when those links point to pages on your own site.It isn’t a universal fix, because incoming links to the wrong domain (www and non-www) from EXTERNAL sites can still cause THAT page to be indexed under the wrong domain. You are best off using root relative links. Those links should start with a slash. In that case the link will always work, even if you move a page, or have other redirects or rewrites on the site.
