The new search-specific social media site Sphinn has been online less than a week, but already has more than 500 registered members (by my unofficial count). In the first couple days, many of us have written about Sphinn with words like "fun," "cool," "distracting," and "addictive."

But is it also good for business? In other words, are there benefits to having your site/blog featured on Sphinn?

You know my opinion, Matt. You are one of the best and most helpful writers in our industry. I think Sphinn is going to result in a ton more readers of your blog, simply because of the exposure to the quality and topic choices of your writing. Nice to see those graphs! Miriam

Hi Matt, what is the Sphinn effect? Hopefully interaction and communication within our field. I think the community building posibility completely outranks the traffic spike we may receive. "Ask not what Sphinn can do for you, ask what you can do for sphinn." What can you do for Sphinn?? Anything you want, but here are the things I am going to try to do... I will spend at least some time on Sphinn everyday. I will vote for the articles that move me, or that I am impressed by, or show me a new thing that makes me go "ooh" I will not vote for a story based on a title or the person submitting it. I will make an honest attempt at leaving quality comments The reason I will do those things is because I care about our community.

I think you sum up all our commitment and feelings, SEOish. Even for us that are more likely to sit the fence.

Thanks Miriam, et al. :-) SEOish -- that’s the nature of good social media. The more time you give the site, the more you benefit, and the more the site benefits.

Make sure you do a follow up post a month from now or a couple months from now showing the Sphinn effect. It will be interesting to see the trend of this site’s effect over time. Make sure you add a "Sphinn It" button on the bottom of your posts!
