At the moment there is one thing which I think needs improving within the community : no one seems to cast negative votes on article suggestions.

I depshinn nearly every time I visit Sphinn and use the Spam link.  One of the problems with desphinning is the required minimum 50 characters.  I have a sentence I cut and paste into each of mine that says "This is spam and not related to search engine marketing topics."  It works well.  I use it for the obvious junk that gets dumped here that has nothing to do with web site dev.

I don't desphinn based on my opinion of an article.  That's what comments are for.

Very good post and welcome to Sphinn Kevin :)

There's another discussion on this topic over here - http://sphinn.com/story/53868

As I wrote there, it is hard to vote things down, especially if you're new. At some level, Desphinn can be interpreted as a negative review for your post and those are easier to take from friends (although we should probably try to see them more as constructive critism!). Maybe more of the older Sphinn members need to lead the way on this.

cre8pc - It seems the desphinn button is more for spam than for differences of opinions. I read the post from the sphinn moderator who posted some of the junk that gets submitted. Some of the submissions are hilarious.

Nick - Thanks Nick. Yes I came across that post this morning (and commented on it). I like the fact that there isn't too much spam here. The moderators obviously do a lot of work however there is a lot of self regulating too which is good.

Desphinn isn't for spam. The spam button is for that. One of the reasons we brought in desphinn was because without it, some people were reporting stories they disagreed with as spam. You can disagree with a story being popular, but that doesn't mean it is spam (which is typically completely off-topic submissions not about internet marketing). I'd suggest looking at these very long past discussions about desphinn:

Well now I'm confused. There is a link for spam, which I use for spam posts that meet the criteria such as what Matt M. used in his funny article.

I desphinn posts that don't fit the community and appear to be dumped here in a Digg or Reddit-like manner. For example, I desphunn:

Story: REAL ESTATE: BUY IT AND KEEP IT What race are you running? | Real Estate Network Group
How do I teach a male 9 1/2 mth. old Toy Rat Terrier the word no? | Dog Training The Easy Way
Foul Weather Gear - Men`s - The Binnacle: Your Complete Online Marine Store
These are also spam.

So I gather I was incorrect and none of the above topics were worth a desphinn but should have been simply slapped with a spam vote?

Seems to me that a Desphinn sends an immediate message that the post is purely junk, whereas the spam links must meet a certain quota before the post will disappear. I assumed the Desphinn was a faster way of putting the brakes on obviously off-topic posts.
