Google seems to feature ads TO your site ON your site. This is obviously wasting webmasters' money. Surprised to see that there is not some sort of filter to prevent this from happening.

There is a filter to prevent this.

Campaign Summary > [Campaign Name] > Site and Category Exclusion

Maybe DigitalPoint is doing it on purpose.

I believe it is still possible to tell Google to use alternate ads of ones own choosing/creation if their ad inventory runs out.
My fave programmer wrote an article detailing a way to do this a while back  --

Creating Alternate Ads for Adsense and Clicksor - http://www.intuitivebydesign.com/08/3ncfRyZQ

Yeah, there is a filter for this, but why wouldn't Google just filter it out automatically?

Exactly. If they do things so well that their site ads get post on the most relevant sites content wise, one would think that they always all wind up on your own site. Sure, give people the option to have them there. Not sure why anybody would want that though.

It's been like this for as long as I know.

What gets me is that I do filter out my own sites, and even though those are the only ones I ever filtered out, for ages Google always sent me the exact same "tip" to make more money:

November 2007 Optimization Report:
You may be filtering ads that monetize well on your site.
