"I used to hear this question from prospective clients around 3 years ago whilst heading up the SEO department at a London based marketing agency. The question was usually asked by SMEs, in the belief that either Google recommended the agencies in the top 10, or that a #1 ranking for [seo] meant that their website could also get a #1 ranking for a completely different search term with ease. This myth was happily spread by those already ranking for term, many of which were using very dubious link acquisition tactics to keep their sites on the first page at the time (and most have since dropped)." - EvilGreenMonkey

It is so true. At my agency we do so much work for our clients that we never do any work on our own site. All of our clients tend to come through networking and we have a great business development team.

This are good tips to help you rank for those terms, if those are of huge importance to you. It makes me wonder though, if for most companies and agencies if their time isn't best spent elsewhere.

What I see typically is that the perceived top keyword is not always the most relevant keyword for a client, doesn't provide the most traffic or usually isn't the best converting keyword. All this says is that education is one of the most important aspects of the SEO client relationship. This was most likely the most important thing 3 years ago and will likely still be the case 3 years from now!

Interestingly enough we see a lot of this type of ego-bidding strategy in the paid search side of things as well so as pittfall already pointed out, "education is one of the most important aspects of the SEO [and PPC] client relationship".

I remember once doing some keyword research for a potential client in the student loan consolidation industry that wanted to get an idea of what bidding on the word "loans" would cost if they targeted the nationally across the USA on Google. Needless to say, it didn't take long to convince them that this wouldn't be a good strategy since just the broad-matched keyword "loans" would cost over $200000 a day for a top 1-3 position!

I didn't even have to get into a relevance and targeting discussion with them - if only all common sense arguements were so easy to illustrate!

Forget about top 10, my site is at #11 and I am getting a well better click through, then was at 9 or 10.
