Unique way of getting some fresh opinions from outside the usual circles. Liked it.
I found it interesting because there are a lot of different opinions and perspectives, even within the 21 responses thus far (believe it is at 23 now). At the least, it showcases pain points people are feeling who are on the outside, looking in.
funny how so many of them seem to think Google manipulates organic results to force people into Adwords.
I feel depressed after reading the responses! Only one person came close to pointing out that SEO alone will not save the world. Some of the responses seemed contrived just so they could link drop their own sites. One so called advertising person couldn't spell. Another still submits to Lycos and Alta Vista??? !!!
All that aside, what's clear is the perception of SEO/M has been severely damaged by con's and those companies who cold call and spam to get business by making promises they can't keep.
so so sad, I have started comparing Seo Consultants to good Lawyers, a lawyer can never guarantee that he will win, but can guarantee that he knows the Law and and has a proven track record. I mean in the UK if i need a lawyer i would research what kind and track record and what it's going to cost to give me the best chance of winning, what I don't do is pick a Lawyer that emails me .. DUI caught with a bottle of beer at the wheel, we can get you off !! 100% Guarantee ..
People ask me how I advertise for clients I don't ... if they need me they find me simple as that

Lots of ignorance in that thread from seemingly smart people.
There should be a "Flag answer as... annoying/stupid/painfully inaccurate" option on there.
Classic example of SEO discussions in the wild. No familiar (to me) names commenting. Commenters whose profiles say they are both CEO of an online company and a musician. One boasts of being a "Top Linked" person who also "accepts all invitations"... blah blah blah.
Credibility is so last year.
Nice insights! a new way to look things in different prospective.
My personal thoughts on why SEO gets such a bad rap:
-> general lack of understanding on what SEO is. honestly, i meet people every day who aren't even clear on what a web browser is. certainly not applicable to people reading sphinn, but very applicable to people looking to contract for SEO services.
-> lack of accreditation available in the field
-> snake oil SEOs do exist, and they've (sadly) placed a very dark cloud over the field
