The world of SEO went all smiling a few days ago with 97th Floor publishing their Social Media for Firefox extension. I think it’s a great idea; Chris thinks so too, and SEOMoz are terribly excited by it. But it’s spying on us. Let me explain.

Everyone, this is not the case, we are not gathering data. I emailed Pierre and gave him full access to our data base that was created to track errors. We will be making any necessary changes and or be removing it all together based off what we see. And I will be releasing a new update through FF for everyone. We are being more than proactive to fix this. We wanted this tool to help the seo community like it has helped us. 97th Floor is my life and there is no way I would risk my reputation upon a FF extension.

Good for responding to the issue right away. I’d vote for removing the "phone home" aspect completely.

Hey all I updated my post to tell the new part of the story. I honestly believe this was an innocent mistake that happened to have serious consequences. It seems fixed now: I saw no data logging activity in the new extension. Well done to Chris and his team for working very quickly to fix it. Pierre

Well handled all around, I’d say.
