[Looks around, makes sure it's safe to reveal secret squirrel SEO information.]
Okay, kids, it's July 3rd. That means it has officially been a month since the Give It Up session that occurred at SMX Advanced 2008. The embargo has lifted and now I can speak about it. If only I remembered what happened... Kidding. Sort of.

Incredibly deep post with tons of information on the panel. Makes my notes look like a children's book.
Yay! An article actually worth reading word for word instead of the usual skimming :-)
In my entire career I've never had anyone challenge my ethics. Let's just say that I completely line-item-vetted the content I presented prior with 2 of the most respected SEO luminaries in the world and feel great about it.
Sphinners, if you are so inclined, take a look at Lisa's post thread for my response. I suppose it's becoming fashionable to have Lisa Barone call you a "Jerk" but I think BC Blog doth protest too much.
Marty, for whatever it's worth, I don't think that YOU are a jerk. I think the Fools Gold Link Exchange technique you discussed is somewhat jerky and I have a hard time swallowing it. I think it is our job to educate clients and people about the industry. If you're a car dealer, I don't think you're justified in selling someone a lemon just because they're dumb enough to buy it. It's just a difference of opinion on how things should be done. Or maybe my age is showing again.
But all that aside, I do apologize if you were offended by the "jerk" comment. I wasn't calling you a jerk, I was calling the technique a jerk thing to do.
Finally! Been waiting a month to read this info. Shame that Rand's presentation was so............ boring. (comparatively)
@marty I considered using that technique (in 2007), but decided against it because it was, indeed, too evil. I imagine that someone will see the nofollowed links, out me for scum, and it will turn into negative PR.... people would remove their links.
@justfred: I actually agree on several levels and thanks for the comment.
After all the furor made about how "black hat" the "Give It Up" session was, I must admit, I'm surprised to see how tame it really was...
While Lisa does a fine job transcribing the information presented I think she totally misses the general good humor of the whole thing. Sure there were some outrageous tactics presented but the audience response I noticed most often was laughter. As someone once said, "lighten up Francis".
@andrewsho: Right...Like Lisa's first "review" of SMX, this is a tempest in a teapot...
It is? I don't think so. My opinion of some people's moral fibre has been altered somewhat by Lisa's revelations.
@g1smd: Thanks for sharing your perspective.
i view it more as "reporting" than encouraging its use. many people are not even aware that such things occur.
Your own personal ethics and tolerance for risk should determine what techniques you employ for each individual campaign
and unfortunately, i have had to apply this technique in the past, late in the campaign , due to fears that there were too many link exchanges going on with that particular site.
