"I do not like doing much traditional SEO client work, and see the business model as having limited longterm value for most SEO consultants. The best consultants could usually make more promoting their own sites and brands than they would working for clients."

Valid points.  Aaron understands the scope of SEO, but what I wonder is...

Wil companies see SEO as only 1 part of the internet marketing mix in the future and hire internet marketing consultants (SEO, PPC, Email, Usability, etc) rather than just SEOs.

Gotta love a "SEO consulting is dead" post, but Aaron still does SEO. Just a little.

@mikebradbury I think your question is spot on and companies are already seeing the value from Internet Marketing shops or SEO savvy ad/pr/interactive agencies over pure SEO consultants. At the same time, more SEO consulting businesses are diversifying.

Oh, as an answer to Aaron's question in the post. We are definitely still selling SEO consulting services, but almost always in conjunction with other online marketing tactics.

In my experience, 3rd party SEOs have amazingly little insight into how the businesses they support actually work. SEO is capitalization on opportunity (search traffic availability) but a consultant should be able to do so much more than just the obvious.

Here's a test: if the first question you ask your client is "what keywords are we targeting" I say you're not an SEO consultant at all. SEO maybe, SEO firm or Agency maybe, but not SEO consultant.
