Reciprocal linking is one of the most disputable SEO questions. The problem is that it is two-fold in nature. First, reciprocal links are natural being the essence of the Internet like linking overall. (So undoubtedly, we can’t do without them.) Secondly, it is the easiest way to manipulate your rankings by engaging in numerous link exchanges.

The trick with recips is simple, is it relevent? If a site about mobile phones links to a site about wedding napkins then it's obvious the link is not so good, potentially even spammy. if the mobile phone site links to a site about mobile broadband them hmmmmm, that makes sense, there's a connection.

Just my view of this subject ;)

This is a topic that I still see happening on Real estate agent websites. Agents linking to each other, in the top serp results it looks like a good number of links are from other realtors... Are these relevant?
argument 1. Yes, because they're from another Real estate related site
argument 2. no, because real estate sites are highly geo-targeted so a link from an alaskan realtor shouldn't be relevant to a florida realtor

I agree.

My SEO Blog has recips, but I'm choosey - I only pick sites I think have a good take on my topics, the SEO space in general, and offer human value.  Search engines are built around regular nature of the web - networking and admiring each others sites is not a bad thing.
