Stoney deGeyter asks the question, "When I only have about 65 characters to work with in a title tag (that which is visible on the search engine results pages), should I use any of that valuable real estate to display my company name?"

Hell Yes it does.  I disagree with Stoney that the search engines can play a big part in helping you gain brand recognition -- that’s all about the site, IMO -- but I will say that there is no better to steal clicks from the #1 spot when you’re sitting at number #4 than with a trusted domain in your title tag.

tagCouldn’t agree more with Stoney here on this. Working in a niche market that’s heavily reliant on brand recognition, a business name can do wonders when prominently placed like: Company Name | ...(Edited for spelling)

I agree in that I see points to both sides of the argument. Do I use my company name in EVERY title tag? Nope. Do I ALWAYS put it at the beginning, or the end? Nope. As was mentioned, it all depends on what you are trying to achieve with the page. If is a topic that you have a ton of indexed content for and you know you are all over the first few SERPS, consider the good AND the bad reasons for having your name in the tags. Some may say seeing your company name on as many positions as possible is great Brand building but I say when someone is only scanning, and they see your name over and over, it will look more like duplicate results rather than unique content by the same author. So like all other tactics, think it through, test it, and realize that each page has a different purpose and should be handled as such.Cheers,@trontastic

Are we really still having this debate. I remember arguing in favour of using the company name in title tags on Doug Heil’s forums about 5 years ago. I use it on the homepage, contact and about pages for all my clients and my own sites and have done for over half a decade.

See the same site name in search results will cause a branding effect, whether you like it or not. You keep seeing the same site, over and over for similar searches, sooner or later you’re gonna associate that site as being authoritative. Studies have already shown that sites that appear #1 in results are considered the be the most authoritative is proof of this. Branding happens.
