The most common question I get asked about Google's ranking is "how do you do it?" Of course, there is a lot that goes into building a state-of-the-art ranking system like ours, and I will delve deeper into the technology behind it in a later post. Today, I would like to briefly share the philosophies behind Google ranking:

1) Best locally relevant results served globally.
2) Keep it simple.
3) No manual intervention.

"no manual intervention" but "we do take action on sites that are in violation of our policies".

Matt Cutts explicitly said at SMX advanced that they take manual intervention.

BS.

You kick a site out of google b/c of a tip off from the spam report. What exactly is not manual there??

I did a search for 31.71971, 35.5857, local co-ordinates for the dead sea area last night. An area I was visiting, did some research, took a few pictures wrote up on the BIBLICAL events in the area. All original content.

Then, Imagining I was a searcher, I re-entered the co-ords into two search engines, your's and the competition..

Here are the results.

http://uk.search.yahoo.com/search;_ylt=A1f4cfcF0ndITmIBLnJLBQx.?p=31.71971%2C+35.5857&y=Search&fr=moz2&ei=UTF-8&rd=r1

http://www.google.co.uk/search?source=ig&hl=en&rlz=&=&q=31.71971%2C+35.5857&btnG=Google+Search&meta=

As you can see Google serves the duplicate content.
It doesn't mention the KML files, contructed, referenced and indexed as instructed, included in both the Geo and non-geo sitemaps.

Surprising, as I would have thought a search engine as advanced as Gooogle market leader in Geo-search would have realised.
a) I was entering co-ordinates
b) It was serving duplicate content

I really don't like Google at the moment and I know a lot of other people feel the same.

You guys are pulling the wool over our eyes..

I think we cleared something about this in this post on our site, written by GS:

@BrianChappell you may want to read the entire article:

"I should add, however, that there are clear written policies for websites recommended by Google, and we do take action on sites that are in violation of our policies or for a small number of other reasons (e.g. legal requirements, child porn, viruses/malware, etc)."

I know everyone is in a tizzy about item #3 but I would take issue with items 1 and 2 as well (as tykeblog does above). While Google has the best and fastest search around, thier results a often not simple.  And the localy info that is made globally available is often not relevant at all.   Am i the only one who notices that when you do a search for "Lawyers in Philadelphia" half of the above the fold area is taken up with a map of the neighborhood around City hall?  Is this relevant or useful?  Do I really need a map of this 5 block radius?  Are these lawyers closest to City Hall relevant?  Did I ask for Lawyers Closest to City Hall in Phila with a map?  These results seem pretty irrelevant to me - just a random list of law firms with urls and phone numbers, no snippets.  So exactly what is the purpose of this  Map and list other than to push Natural Search listings below the fold?  Any ideas?   As for simplicity how does the map and list add to simplicity,  seems like it complicates a pretty straightforward search.

What would be simple and relevant would be a box to input the zip code or location of a laywer you  are looking for - kind of what they have for movie searches, or Airline flight info.  But that takes up very little real estate on the page and still gives plenty of room for natural search results.

I would say that those three items are in the mix, but they left out a big one that may be closer to number one than they admit.... "make as much money as possible from paid listings"   When you add that to  the mix it all starts to become very clear what their full "pholosophy" is.
