*** We’ll be building a board of directors... ... We’ve also been tasked to recruit an outsider to serve on the board, and a very good friend (despite her quiz criticism) may be taking that position in the next couple weeks, which we’re thrilled about. *** Hmmm. I am wondering if she was asked before, or after, the quiz? That puts a whole new sphinn on things...

"It was before the quiz :)" Heh. Yeah. That’s some tough lovin’ from your board... Hopefully she’s just getting it out of the way before she starts ;)

Nah, we’re hoping she’s just as tough on us in the future.

I read Vanessa’s review assuming that it was coming from an impartial non-related outsider. However, I noted the bit where she mentioned Rand as a friend, and the mention of meeting up with Rand later. Until then, I didn’t even realise they lived anywhere close. I didn’t see any disclosure that the review was coming from someone who had already been asked to be on the SEOmoz staff. Good for Vanessa to land that post, but in light of that recent announcement, it now seems odd that any SEOmoz "staff" would write a review of their own company’s quiz. Was there more linkbait in the story than anyone first imaged? Or. Maybe I’m just a cynical bugger?

Hey g1smd, my post absolutely was from an impartial non-related outsider and there was no coordination in any way on that post. And I don’t think Rand was necessarily too pleased about it. I have been up front about the fact that Rand and I are friends. In fact, here are some posts that mention his fiance: http://www.vanessafoxnude.com/category/friends/ http://www.vanessafoxnude.com/2007/06/19/making-the-right-choice/ And as you mention, I said right up front on the quiz post that he was my friend. But my post about the quiz had nothing to do with whether I knew him or not. That’s not how I write on my blog. What I write is not influenced in any way by whether I happen to know someone. I write my honest opinion. If I were to become a board member I wouldn’t become part of the SEOmoz staff; I would have an advisory role in which I would be free to continue to post about my opinions just as I do now. But the fact is that while they have asked me, I haven’t accepted. I would need to learn a lot more about what it would involve before I commit one way or the other. I’ve been asked to be on several boards and so far I haven’t accepted any of them. So in no way was my post someone writing a review of their company’s own quiz. Hope this clears things up.

[p]Heh. I enjoy your blog a lot.[/p]  [p]Elsewhere, the recent trend of one linkbait after another in the SEO world is tending to make some of us readers turn a bit cynical I think...[/p]  [p]Keep on posting the good stuff![/p]
