Should social media marketing should be an ongoing part of your Internet marketing campaign or should it be a stand alone initiative?

Social media is a tricky little monkey, for the most part it seems to me that people of like minded persuasion tend to group together. As a business would I spend time developing a facebook/myspace/secondlife profile for my business or brand? -No way. The ROI just isn’t there. Submitting links to your unique content on social sites...I’m all in. Unless you’re really a large entity/brand....you should focus on building value/content in one place. In the words of my favorite sage: "Baby steps"

Why should you ignore this marketing giant? From the beginning of time word of mouth marketing has always been the best form of marketing. Social Media is just a new tool for word of mouth marketing.

Ryanol, I view social media campaigns as I would an advertising campaign. Does this social network reach the audience that I am trying to reach? StumbleUpon and Sphinn do, so I spend time on them. MySpace and SecondLife do not so I ignore then. It is all about finding the audience that is right for you and your business. That is why people have mixed success on social networks. It is all about finding the right ones for your company or web site.
