The link building challenge of big brands isn’t in obtaining new links, but in using the strength of these links optimally. Converting link juice isn’t very hard, but certainly worth the effort.

I think this article points the problem of obtaining great anchor text links with big brands. From experience, my biggest problem with link building for large brands is red tape.  They may have 30 different, well linked domains, and could easily use keyword-rich, anchor text on all, but crossing that bridge is difficult.

I think it really depends on what kind of industry you are in. The big brands still next link building mostly because any natural links they get are just going to be their company name or domain name. While they are getting the PR juice they are using missing out on the keyword density of properly optimized links.
