You forgot company blogs written by insiders on the advice of their SEO. These are almost always dull, self-aggrandising, irrelevant and short-lived.

I really don't want to come off as overly negative, but your third point takes a shot at people needing to know how to write when you've just created a list-style article without a single sub-heading. There's basically 3 headings in this articles just screaming.... EMPHASIZE ME!

Otherwise, a decent article. Pretty straight-forward... not sure who it's going to pursuade though. The first 2 types of blogs are made that way intentionally while the last is always done by people who've already made up their minds.

I bet most average internet users come across at least one of these on a regular basis. What's worse is that the blogging template makes these shill sites seem more legitimate.

Also, this reminds me of a stat I heard recently: there are more blogs than readers! Just looked it up and think Jeff Jarvais originally put this together.

I agree that splogs (spam blogs) and MFA (made-for-AdSense) blogs and sites are a waste of bytes, but I don't run into them often at all. One way to find good blogs is to see what the top tier bloggers are linking to. I almost always find interesting and (often) well-written blogs this way. And hey, one thing this particular article could have used is a few links to related content. What about From SEO To Social Media: Content Is Still King or Is Your Content Worthy For Social Media Users?? Both articles have good advice about writing for the web.

As Gamermk points out, the writers of said blogs are probably a) not concerned with SEO best practices or b) blogging along without worry. Seems like you might be tilting at windmills. I'm always game for a good rant though.  ;)

True dat. When I make fake blogs, I at least try and make them funny. Some just make no effort.

I agree with you..I also don't read blogs that have hidden ads on them..whenever I stumble upon one..I immediately click the close button.

As for people blogging because its good for SEO.... well of course people are going to do this!  But it can be a good thing... after all, we're telling people they need to make their websites *more relevant*!  Its easy to be snarky, but not everything that begins with SEO as its motivation is bad.  Often, I find that people start with doing it for SEO, but end up creating a lot of relevant content in the process.  Then, the division between doing it for SEO, and doing it for passion, self-expression, or other reasons becomes blurred.

It's amazing how many people do exactly what Jill is talking about hoping to cash in on Google traffic. Like Bill wrote in his recent SEL post, profit-centric approach to blogging results in splogs.

Another big mistake people make (especially outside of SEO blogosphere) is running strictly self-promotional blogs that only target potential buyers, writing one-sided laughable "why now is the best time to buy real estate" type sales pitches to try to drive a sale instead of really talking honestly about what's on your mind. Too many people mistake blogs for a cheap substitute for a 2 hour infomercial.

When you're overly fixated on making money sometimes you can't see the forest for the trees.

Right on the mark.  But it's a pity that those spam blogs really do work.  I think once the search engines really can sort the good from the bad many of them will fall away.

But as always, if your reason for doing it is purely for the engines then you are doing it for the wrong reasons.

Sure, I agree there are far too many splogs out there but then you have to have sympathy for small companies wiSure, I agree there are far too many splogs out there but then you have to have sympathy for small companies with little or no budget for SEO or Copywriters.

Everything they read tells them they need new content that will generate links and if they don't have the money to pay a professional, well sure they are going to try create it themselves. Unfortunately, the end result is normally a poorly written/uninteresting blog but you can't blame them for trying to better their business all the same.th little or no budget for SEO or copywriters. They are brainwashed into believing

Personally, I think its funny to complain about Blogs loaded with anchor text links when the author's footer has the same problem... live and let live Jill!

mcday, what footer are you talking about? My website (www.highrankings.com) doesn't have a footer loaded with anchor text links.

Actually you are wrong - the Number 1 type of blog that sucks, is this one in particular.

In my opinion, it's a bit pompous for anyone in the marketing industry to sit here and say a certain type of product delivery "sucks" (very poor word for an educated person.) This is the second post by you, that baffles me.

It is not the job of the marketer to determine that something "sucks", it is the job of the marketer to deliver results by providing solutions. Your blog alone will give me enough reasons to ignore the existence of Search Engine Land and Sphinn, your delivery lacks any real solution and leaves the reader feeling upset. Poor judgement.

I look forward to articles on Search Engine Land, because often times they deliver knowledge of the industry that I might have missed over the week. Posts like this one, turn me off completely. It is the blog that goes outside of what is normal that delivers results, doesn't take a genius to figure that out. Heck you don't even have to write these days, and your blog will still deliver. You can avoid Spell Checks and they will still deliver, you can put as many darn links as you want, and they still deliver. Anchor text blogs, point out about 60% of the content on SEL and other well known industry blogs. Your About Jill footer on your post alone is Anchor Text Filled - the irony.

Perhaps I'm mistaken, I do tend to view SEL as a leading website of information for this industry, a pedestal if I may. But a post like this, leaves me wondering, if I should look elsewhere for more honest and professional content.

I tell all my clients, write your Blogs!! If you can't spell, who cares? Not everyone reading can distinguish between necessary and necessarry - not everyone carries around a dictionary to determine if the person can spell or is grammatically efficient. No one sits around and click Spell Check before they read a blog - who cares!!! A blog is about you, who you are, not about some undisclosed person that others should perceive you as. There is nothing wrong with just being yourself, 99% of todays top blogs are people being themselves and delivering results at the same time. There are more multi-millionaires who lack a college degree than there are multi-millionaires in the SEO/SEM industry.

I have a personal blog, where I write just about anything - it doesn't have the biggest traffic in the world. But it's mine, and mine alone - that I can take pride in. I work with bloggers who have some of the highest traffic in their industry, and I am proud of them, because they did it on their own. Not because I told them what sucks, but because I provided them with confidence that they can do it. I have a client who offers the little hover ad links, and last year they were selling membership at $200, in January membership is now at $7500 - should I tell them, you think they suck?

Also, use guest bloggers to liven up the place. There should be a guest-bloggers-r-us.com website to find a new view for the blog. Thanks for the advice!

You also left out the "My Last post was 3 years ago and I have moved on" blog.  I alwaus check the dates of posts when I come across an article on an unfamiliar blog to make sure I am not reading about something that was relevant years ago.
