We’ve all heard various experts toot the horn of various elements of SEO: “Content is king!” or “It’s all about the links.” Others tout their proprietary software tools or throw out terms like latent semantic indexing. The truth is, all of these things play a part in SEO (along with a bunch of other things), but if you focus on any one of these, you’re missing the bigger picture.

I totally agree. The really interesting thing about SEO is that if everyone were focused on having a great user experience and communicating with their customers we wouldn't need it.

google does a pretty good job of finding the right websites and they are getting better all the time. I am starting to think our role is communicating and having conversations online. talking with our customers, friends, people who share similar geek interests.  If we do that consistently and authentically then google will find us.

The job of the search engine then becomes introducing newcomers to the conversation.  Try to game and manupulate the search engines all you want but unless you are actively communicating it's not going to do you much good.

An excellent point that often gets lost in lieu of focusing attention on the more technical aspects of SEO.  It's important to remember that search engines are simply a means by which to expose a site to search users - having them visit a site simply because it appears prominently in the search results is a guarantee of NOTHING.

What visitors find when they reach a site is what is MOST important.  Without a well-organized, user-friendly site that provides the user with the information he/she desires, the effort put forth in achieving a prominent ranking will be all for naught.
