Uh, this is not Godaddy's .me domains, the .me TLD is not owned by Godaddy. The title of this Sphinn makes it sound as if Godaddy "owns" .me and they don't. Just trying to clarify.
That is correct .me is a ccTLD and is owned by Montenegro. However, GoDaddy won the rights to offer the registrations to the general public along with 2 other companies. You are not able to register through Montenegro's domain.me website. Although domain.me is the owner of the TLD for intents and purposes the registries like GoDaddy have the repsonsibility to provide accurate information and successful registrations.
The big issue is that in my view GoDaddy intentionally hid the fact that ALL premium domain names were already witheld from being registered by Montenegro. Then when they and domain.me made a tech mistake, these names were open for registration, and were actually registered multiple times by thousands of people.
GoDaddy was caught in the act.
It is estimated that GoDaddy held over 200 million dollars of domain name purchase as a result of their mistake for 6 days.
