There's an important point missing from the three he gave for why one story might send more traffic than another: what the story is about.

The story that sent him the most spends was also the one that was most targeted to the interests of search marketers, of which there's a heavy number here.

I did touch upon the niches that Sphinn is aimed at:

"What is so great about Sphinn is it is full of bloggers and so if you are in the blogging, make money online, SEO or social media niches you don’t need to dramatically change your title to suit the audience which saves you from alienating your loyal readership, which is what digg often requires."

I thought it was too obvious to make it into an actual point on it's own, buy yes that is a very valid point.
