Scads -- what a great term! Right up there with splogs, flogs, scams and spam. I applaud the Alliance Against Bait & Click (AABC) for fighting to stop scads. Great cause.
ROFL @ Greg
and there are scads of these scads
definitely a sign of a maturing industry. self policing is a good move...
I'm sure someone will come up with a subcategory dubbed "Hanging Scads"
FTA:
When the brand name is entered as a keyword in a search, the scad appears - hijacking the consumer to the competitor’s site.
This is misleading. Typing in a search will not allow someone to "hijack" your browser, you still have to click their ad.
I bid on competitor trademarks all the time to offer competing products. I don't include other people's trademarked terms in my ads or on my pages, and I don't deceive anyone. I don't see anything wrong with offering alternative to what the searcher is looking for as long as it's not deceptive.
BTW, if anyone read the post earlier: you saw an unedited version of the press release without my comments. I corrected that. It's seems clear that AABC's real (or main) target is editorial policy that allows advertisers to bid on competitors' brand names.
@ DarkMatter: I completely agree. I've been offered the opportunity to interview an AABC spokesperson - will report back.
looking forward to it szetela.
