NOTE: Ive moved the general welcome message here: http://sphinn.com/story/126 Below are comments that covered the closed beta test. If you want to comment going forward now that we are open, please use this URL: http://sphinn.com/story/124 Goal Of The Beta Test Over the next day, were really looking to see if there are any key features that are missing and especially to know if whats out there now isnt working. Kick the tires; slam the cupboard doors. If somethings going to break, we want it to break during the beta. Wed especially like to know if there are key forums or social networking sites you think should be added to the profile pages. Well try to get them added. Do let us know if theres other info you think people should be able to list on those pages, to. Known Cosmetic Issues + Were adjusting the tabs that have kind of weird spacing + In IE6, theres some space between the top category links and the subcategory bar + When moving between main tabs (like New Topics to Events Calendar), you might find the page shifts a bit Known Feature Issues + We havent added many events yet. Were working on that, and no, it wont just be our own :) + You cant have groups for friends, like some social sites offer. Its on the list + You cant subscribe to a feed of what all your friends are posting. Yep, on the list. + The feed URLs probably wont work because of the login requirement. That will get fixed when the beta ends and we go public + The buttons to put Sphinn on your site wont work because of the login requirement + Were hoping to have a system at launch where in addition to a button, you can have a text links, FeedBurner feed flare and hopefully the ability to have comments about your story on Sphinn flow back to your site. + There arent many stories or discussions in the system. Thats the beta test part! Voting is set fairly low at the moment for topics to go Hot. Thats will be upped as we see activity increase. Thanks again for trying out the system. Please fire away with comments, suggestions or whatever below.
Sounds really nice. I will be looking forward to using Sphinn - allthough, I dont think I will ever learn how to pronnounce that name without hurting myself :)
Spin is the pronunciation, I assume.
Is it really that simple? ;)
I know you have a lot on your plate, but perhaps an SEO/SEM Jobs category would be a modest lead in to the often discussed jobs board. Also, in honor of the Cryogenic Status for Threadwatch, a Rumors and Reminiscing section.
Awesome! Looks great. I did notice that (this is a short term bug) it looks like you can view a profile page without being logged into the site (I mean the beta test login). For intance: http://sphinn.com/user/view/profile/vanessafox Also, the profile tabs are really screwy in IE. Not that I can understand why anyone would use IE, but I suppose it could happen.
The comment numbers near the headline and snippet of each post arent changing in real time. Seems theyre on a noticeable delay.
Also, I dont see a way to reply to a specific persons comment - i.e. If I want to respond to Jonah above, I have to type it as a regular comment - which will make threads a nightmare when you have 100 comments and 14 different conversations going. Id like to see a way to reply to an individual comment and have it indent underneath vs always having to reply to the thread as a whole. :)
Dang it... You may also want to put a time limit on being able to edit comments. I made a comment 16 minutes ago that I can still edit. Maybe you already have a timer on the comment editing... but Id make it less if there is one - trolls and troublemakers love being able to edit posts well after the fact.
Jonah, look in the Other category. There are two jobs areas there. Rae, I debated the usual threaded model and decided to go without it at first. We can always bring it back. If you look at most of the traditional forums (WMW, SEWF, etc), they dont do threaded comments. Id be curious what others think. Ive also often found threaded comments more confusing than helpful. Like I said, perhaps well go back.
As for the Sphinn button for your site: http://sphinn.com/tools.php - is it possible to have a version so that the button only appears once a story has been Sphunn? That way I dont have tacky blue logos on every single post unless there is a reason (no offense, I specifically use the Digg plugin I do because it only appears once the story has been dugg). As an aside - shame on you Danny for not buying Sphunn.com - seems Digg made the same error: http://dugg.com/ lmao - but dont worry, I picked it up once I realized you had failed to register it and will transfer it to you providing you promise to follow full domain name diligence in the future. ;-)
Clicked on the "edit" button for my comment above and this appeared above the main content area of the page: Warning: current(): Passed variable is not an array or object in /var/www/html/sp/sphinn.com/templates_c/c_6e9d47fca259527c18191d29afe6df5a.php on line 123
Very cool. It may or may not have been discussed, and probably a bit late now - but why not preserve the link pop you have with SEL - and 301 this in to a subdirectory, and add links on the corebrand. You can use the cool sphinn.com branding, and still pull off a 301 to benefit your global link pop of the main brand. Just my "always about the links and rankings" take since its likely to be very well linked. Seems counterproductive to start from scratch again, and compete with yourself on different phrases (if that is the goal, then perhaps even a subdomain?) Very sharp interface - and thank god - I need something to check all day long now that TW is gone. Will we be able to drop the occassional f-bombs when its necessary? :) After editing a comment, you might want to add the "editable for xx minutes feature as well. Digg really sucks with only under a minute or whatever to edit comments.
[snip] - there is NO language filter... is that a promise or an oversight? ;-)
>language filter Leave it to Rae to figure that out:) You may want to thread comments with indents a little bit for when people go off topic too. I got the same error as Rae above when editing too - though the functionality works fine.
stuntie - youre not reading the above comments are ya? ;-) Also, any chance we can get permalinks to comments? So if there is a thread with 119 comments and one gem at #68, I can simply send the link to the comment to someone and not have a fishing expedition for them as they try to find the one Im looking for?
Well, now my newest wish will seem petty compared to all of this. But I want a bigger profile picture. You can barely see my phone balanced on top of my cat.
Ok, just out of curiosity: http://sphinn.com/GoogleOther/Jakob-Nielsen-Not-Optimistic-about-Personalized-Search-1/ how did this entry end up with a "1" tacked onto the end of the url? Damn... Im thinking Michael shot me over some of his redbull. :P
I agree the interface is sharp, but I am not sold on three levels of navigation across the top. That is really pushing it. Why arent you using any side navigation? Why are you using 800 pixels wide as the standard? Surely this audience is at least ready for 1024. The Water Cooler may well serve the place of our recently departed TW, particularly if we find out that certain SE engineers have added it to their RSS. Speaking of RSS, with so many topic areas and subtopics, can we manage subscriptions at the topic or thread level? Finally, I see some overlap between "Event Calendar" and Conferences and Workshops". Shouldnt Conferences be a subset of the Event Calendar?
Question on reasoning behind voting and saving? Im a social media *user*, trained by Digg. This means, when I digg something, it is saved for me forever and ever. Now, Sphinn also has a save option, which is seperate from the Sphinn option. Why the need for two? Id imagine if you are interested enough in something to save it, youd Sphinn it. So, why the need for the double option? Will those listed in the "Vote" section drop off after a certain amount of time or a certain number?
I see no "bury" like feature - does this mean strict editorial oversight or trust? I hope you say editorial oversight. Because if there is any industry that knows how to game social media and do it with no shame, it is this one. ;-)
I logged out and got the oops page. then I logged in and it gave me the oops page. It logged me in though.
This is all excellent, thanks everyone. Some responses... Comment time limits: excellent idea, just havent looked around to figure out how to do this. Agree -- we need to have some so people dont muck around. Sphinn Button: I think we will have what you want, something that only appears if a story has been submitted. For SEL, I need something to replace where we show comment numbers, since commenting will be here. So I think were developing some JavaScript that looks and if theres a story, lights up with the number -- and if not, stays quiet. I think. Maybe. Sphunn: Thank you. I hang my head in shame. I promise! Why Not Withing SEL: Oh, Todd, you do not know the discussions we had about this. sel/spin? spin.sel.com? That sort of thing. In the end, I felt Sphinn deserved to standalone as its own site. The SEL community will lean on it heavily, but some people might like it on its own. Plus, isnt it nice to have such a short URL to type? Language: Hmm, I pretend not to notice questions about profanity and the lack of this being implemented for now. Comment Permalinks: Gads -- yeah, it doesnt have them, does it. Yikes. Will look into that pronto. Bigger Pictures: I agree, but probably not right away. I think its kind of hard. Maybe some neat JavaScript hover and make it bigger might work. Dunno, will put it on the list. That Weird 1 At The End: So Pligg, the software we use, kind of sucks in some ways. Say you submit, then decide to modify something. It stores the first story and starts a new one tacking on a 1. Modify again, you get a 2 at the end, and so on. Makes me angry. But suspect we have to live with it for the near term. On navigation, well -- I find it kind of handy to have it all up there. Had some debate on whether you should have tabs first, then categories, then subcategories -- and maybe the categories disappear unless you are on a topic page. Short story is, well, we decided to go out with this for now and see how it works. 800 Versus 1024: I think well stay conservative a bit longer. I did look not too long ago at screen sizes for SEL, and there were still enough people to make it wise to hang in there. RSS Management: See the feeds page, and Ive outlined how we dont yet have topic specific feeds. Working on it. When we get them, wasnt planning on providing management tools here. Instead, youd pick and choose what you want and add to your own feed reader. But can consider this. Events Calendar Overlap: Yeah, was already talking about possible confusion there last night. Conferneces & Webinars might break into two buttons, and each button might instead be the SMN and SMX logos. Or, we might lose that entire button, figuring youll find out about SMN and SMX through our sidebar units.
Vanessa - logging out/in - what browser are you using?
Got this on the "network" page, though the rest of the page rendered fine: Parse error: parse error, unexpected $ in /var/www/html/sp/sphinn.com/templates_c/c_ef20b2b5fff08f636a080a9108ff9329.php on line 136
This was in firefox, but it seems to work ok now.
+1 vote for threaded comments +1 vote for bigger avatar pictures
Save Feature: Yeah, its weird. Its part of the Pligg software, and Im exploring it more for the help files. Ill probably just say to ignore it! Exactly as you say, voting for a story saves it. I suppose some people might want to save a story but not vote for it. Personally, Id like to see a way to maybe have saving tied with tagging and organizing stories you like. Its more stuff on my todo list to explore. Buries: I think we have this capability, and I might bring it in, if necessary. One key thing is that unlike Digg, we are going to have an active role in editing and moderating. On the flip side, Im hoping that just telling people to submit their own stuff might help reduce some of the gaming that can happen.
Nicely done Danny. I like it. Some small things Ive seen thus far, others have been covered already: - Tab order in the profile page: When editing your profile and are in the the company field it does not tab over to the title field next. Instead it tabs to the AIM. - no chance you can modify your profile name after its created eh? Like from Ken to KenJurina? - why isnt Jonahs pic loading above? Maybe he attempted to load a pic and then it didnt default back? Or maybe Jonahs so darn tall that his pic broke the field!?! Man that guy is big. Big but nice. Still looking around for more, but a bigger pic would be nice too. I agree with Vanessa.
Just cosmetic, but after you rate a post and click on the "+" or "-" the thank you message almost runs over the author and time line. This happens for instance on your post Danny. Looks like the fields are too wide or maybe this is an IE 6 thing. I like the "check spelling" but it doesnt seem to work now. I just posted and the spell check worked on the initial post and now am trying to post again but the check spelling button isnt functioning now and Im getting an "error on page" message in the status bar. So, if my spelling sucks in this post its your fault...or my grade 9 teacher Ms. Jabber.
Its all good! I am ready to open the link building floodgates for sphinn Thursday at 11am.
Neat idea :) Some thoughts, in no particular order... May get (unjustly) accused of taking advantage of Threadwatchs demise The name... ugh... sorry, love the idea, hate the name. Login-required-for comments: may be slightly an uphill battle, but one worth fighting, IMHO. Though you could conceivably chicken out and permit comments from "anonymous cowards" (a la slashdot). When I tried "Adam Lasnik" for username, it said "Invalid characters." You should make it clear up front that spaces are not permitted and/or note what is permitted (e.g., letters only, no spaces. Case sensitive). In the profile editing screen, it was unclear which (if any) fields were required. Under networks, you forgot PicasaWeb ;) Maybe also Tumblr? Too many clicks to upload a profile pic. Also, when I first uploaded it, I instinctually hit SAVE instead of UPLOAD. It should still know what to do :) And I agree with Vanessa that the pics are really really tiny. Id like to see how comments have been rated; just the number of ratings alone isnt very exciting.
When I submitted a post, I clicked "preview" and noticed a spelling error. I clicked modify and got a gray box popup that said: "The page you are trying to view contains POSTDATA that has expired from the cache..." etc and if I clicked cancel, I couldnt edit the post. when I hit ok, it took me back to edit the post, the url was still there, but it had changed the category, title and cleared the description box to the default. Yeah, uh, wasnt pleased. ;-)
Nice idea Danny. Site looks good and any feedback I have appears to have been covered. Im so glad this will replace your old comments option and its good to see you offering an option for more discussions. The site reminds me of a combination of Digg and SEOmoz. BTW - are we allowed to ban Kevin Rose? ;-)
I want an RSS feed per user, this way I can "stalk" your submissions and comments in my reader, even sweeter would be to have one feed for both. If you are going to let people put links in their profile page, Id no follow them the temptation to abuse is too great. You could do something similar to SEOMoz where you have earn a certain status to get the no-follow removed. this is a weakness in most social systems, you should require people to view the story before spinning it. Blind votes are really ways to game the system. Is there a way to see all the stories submitted by my friends? It seems so web 1.0 but how about an email a friend feature for a story. How about a category for video and podcasting? if ive spunn a story the message should change to keep me from spinning twice. Digg also changes the voted icon with a star thingy if one of my friends voted, sometimes gets sympathy votes but also make me check it out sometime. Also you should force avatars to be certain size. For oddballs pad with white or black my blog log style, otherwise they look all jumbly and jagged. Hands red bull back to rae
BTW the main post is showing only 3 comments, but there are clearly more than that.
Modify Name: I think we can do this manually. Ill have Michelle check on it. Were going to have to do it for Gord, Im certain :) Threadwatch: Well, weve been working on this for months. But hey, was already accused of masterminding the demise of TW, heh. Name: Itll grow on you, promise. Usernames With Spaces: Heard this from gary who wanted gary_price. Well make that clear.
Ok, so, I made a post here: http://sphinn.com/OtherSearching/Skooiz-unveils-study-on-behaviour-and-attitude-of-French-Canadians-when-searching-the-web/ and interestingly enough, I realized I used the french spelling for "behavious" and then low and behold, AFTER I published it, I was able to click an admin link and edit the title and description. BUT, when I edited the title to change the spelling - yep, it also of course, edited the url: http://sphinn.com/OtherSearching/Skooiz-unveils-study-on-behavior-and-attitude-of-French-Canadians-when-searching-the-web/ So, the old page still exists though and according to http://www.webrankinfo.com/english/tools/server-header.php is returning a 302 but all I am seeing as a user is a blank white page. I dont know, the whole thing seems kinda messy to me. You dont want people changing urls after something had been posted. It just is asking for a nightmare.
Now I am going to post the: http://www.sphinn.com/longest-url-i-can-do-for-a-minute-here-to-see-if-your-css-can-cope-for-it-and-also-what-happens-to-the-site-design-when-a-really-nasty-and-long-ass-url-are-posted-in-the-comment-area-of-this-here-type-of-page-and-then-you-can-see-if-it-needs-fixing-or-not-and-i-will-hand-the-redbull-back-to-graywolf
Also, any reason that url gives me a 403 instead of a 404?
Modify Loses Data: Yeah, has happened to me, Michelle said it didnt happen to her, so I thought maybe I was just weird. Clearly Im not. Well, I am, but.... Right now, Ill have to add help messages that this might happen to right below the modify button, since I dont think theres an easy fix. RSS Feed Per User: So you read my carefully crafted feed pages, where it says, wait a minute, hang on, Ill get it: "Sphinn Profile Feeds: When viewing a members profile (including your own), the orange feed icon can be used to get a feed of what a particular person has submitted, had published, commented about and so on." Heh heh, it breaks a writers heart. Look, graywolf comment feed: http://sphinn.com/rss/user/graywolf/commented. OK, so its not showing your comments. Hmm. But here are you submissions working: http://sphinn.com/rss/user/graywolf/all Nofollow: Yeah. Yeah. On the list in my head that wed better figure out how to add that in various places. I was figuring we might make it a week before putting it in. Status idea to lose it is nice. I know -- you could pay money and wed remove nofollow and then....oh, hi, Matt. View Friends Stories: I want this sooooooo bad, but not yet. The feed page explains its on the list. Misc: Yeah, the comment counts arent working. The button should say Sphunn after youve sphunn.
@AndyBeal - I say we demand a bury feature and then bury anything about apple or politics... Speaking of which danny - I noticed here: http://sphinn.com/guidelines.php that you pretty much have "dont game us and categorize correctly" - but what about the harder rules - politics allowed? Can you link to a site with adult content? Can you link to a site that contains adult content but not on the page youre linking to? What constitutes adult content? And how do I report an offensive story?
>So you read my carefully crafted feed pages Ive been trained to look for the little orange feed icon in the address bar, since I saw it there on other pages and not that page, my incorrect assumption was it didnt exist. You only get the sphunn message when you reload/visit a new page, not real time, so I pushed the button and since theres no feedback Im not sure it "took". Is there an upcoming/most page/section page? the profile name/avatar should take me to your profile. the break for the snippet looks character count based, if it doesnt split on a space maybe you should back it up so you dont have single letters hanging
if you are going to enable the bury feature pleeeeeeeeze be transparent about it. shadow/stealth buries are just evil.
ack not a graceful failure http://sphinn.com/user/view/profile/madeupname
takes the redbull back from michael: http://sphinn.com/network.php Ok, I know you cant go all in depth on the rating system, and who knows, maybe I havent figured it out in the last three glorious hours or its simply borked... 1. What is the difference between a Published and Published Spin? I get it, but you need to be clear about it. 2. Ive seen peoples ratings go up AND down. This seemed to coincide with a specific incidents... but, the incidents dont make total sense as in why theyd factor into reputation (in three hours to me anyway lol). 3. How is it that betagirl who has zeros across the board is listed as the second most reputable user? Unless part of two makes sense. 4. What does "News" mean? (pretending I havent watched it for three hours) Little popup boxes that explain these things would help.
And then, literally two minutes after posting the above, betagirl drops to fourth from the bottom of the list.
hey danny - can we add time zones to the events listing?
It would also be cool if, when you went back into a thread, the comments you hadnt seen yet were shaded and maybe even you could be jumped down to there. I think seomoz does something like this.
and now shes back to second lol
Anyone have an issue finding out how to submit a story?
@rustybrick - I did originally look to the top right as trained, but the submit tab was pretty obvious when I realized it wasnt where I was trained to look.
Nice Danny - looking good... couple of quick things: 1) Comments (numbers) arent showing for all of the stories on the "popular page". I saw 20 for this and none for the others even though they had them. 2) With the editorials - disable the link that would let you click out (to nowhere). 3) Open news stories in a new window (ala Digg) or the same (as they are now - ala blogs)? Was this on purpose? 5) Karma - Ive seen this other places and everyone always stays at 10. Will this change here? Nice job!
what did barry do to lose a reputation point hes at 9 sorry theres a little bit of algo-buster inside all of us
@graywolf - I had nine when I was beta testing it the other week. I guess I did something to upset Danny. :P
I clicked sphinn it for this story and it changed the count, but it didnt change the display to sphunn. It still said sphinn it. So, you know, I clicked it again, and it gave me an error that I had already sphunn it. Which was true and all, but still, it said I could sphinn it and it lied.
Note that when I refreshed the page, it changed to sphunn.
2 more questions (see how I have, in a nice, organized fashion, started asking them here rather than in my fantastic other thread?): -Why can I "unvote" on the vote tab in my profile but not in the actual story? And why isnt it called anti-sphinn or something? -Why doesnt anyone want to be my friend. Damn you all. Except for Rae.
Dude. Im a 9 now too. You not only wont be my friend but youre in some secret back room, trash talking me.
Just a quick note that Michelle and I are having a very nice phone conversation about all this, loving the feedback and working out how to do lots of this stuff. So hang in there. And were making picture bigger. But this means for a short period, you might find they all go away. So dont panic. OK? No panic.
@rustybrick - and you were at a ten when I first got here today. @vanessafox - you know who loves you lmao.
@Sugarrae ill give you a plus up if you give me a plus up. ;-)
@rustybrick - done, but weve been messing with it - it seems borked. :P
Im proud to say we now have the biggest pictures of well, we have big pictures. For the record, Digg icons are all of 16x16. And over at SEOmoz, lots of people are 40x40. OK, a few for no reason clear to me are 80x80. But after extensive testing (hey Michelle, what should we try -- how about 50x50 and 30x30?), we plugged those in and boom, we like what we see. You do too? Note of warning -- you might need to reupload for better quality. The server automatically resized the old ones, so they might be wonky. Or whatever the technical term is.
LOL - like those buttons on the lamp posts at street corners that you press to change the red hand to a green man walking.
My avatar just is the word "avatar". The shunning of me continues. I see how you all are.
Its also somewhat difficult to tell if you have a message. Now I see why I have no friends. Im much too whiny.
@vanessafox I friended/stalked you before, ask rae I sent her an email I have proof, I so want points, a zillow shirt or something for that
@graywolf - you so didnt stalk me. Youre just saying that to make me feel better. ;) Another thing I noticed, on the network page, it says: Become a member of our network! Register here! Even if youve already registered.
inbox doesnt tell me when I have mail a counter or different color would be helpful.
vanessa,, your panicking
FYI, reputation normally is recalculated three times per day. But we can go in and refresh it more often. Hey, I just did. Also, we apparently do a lot of caching (which a future version of Pligg coming soon will eliminate). But thats part of the reason for some of the funkiness youre seeing on counts and stuff.
heh, so aaron just votes for a popular story and gets a rep of 15. ha! i so have to rig this better.
@graywolf, I think the inbox count thing must be because of the caching. The second time I got a message, my inbox link at the top showed like this: inbox (1). But it didnt the first time. @rustybrick - AAAAAAAAAAAAh! Whatever do you mean?
Telephone conversation concluded. Some fast thoughts. First, guess Ill stay up to 5am again. Well, I have a fresh glass of diet coke and.... Theres some confusion about sorting and Hot Topics versus New Topics and stuff. Why, theres even a thread on it: http://sphinn.com/SphinnZone/Questions-On-Sorting/ You probably missed that because it was lamely called Questions... originally by someone who supposedly is a writer. So I renamed it (which handily renamed the URL, that DOES suck. Might have to take that ability away from people other than mods. Hmmm). Anyway, were likely to rename that New Topics tab to be Whats New so that hopefully it will be clear this shows you everything thats new on the site. And, were going to shift the default sort from the confusing Active (which means something either just got a vote or a comments, I was going to write help about it but have been busy you know commenting) to newest submitted in. That way it will be easier to spot when that guy with discount nikes for sales comes in and submits over and over again. But well nuke him fast, dont worry. Unless its a weekend. Then, well -- did I mention its late?). Were also going to lose the breadcrumb trails on the left-hand side and move sort options over there, so theyll be more noticeable. The Conferences & Webcast tab is going bye bye. Events Calendar will be Calendar, and well probably push some icons up next to the words cuase everyone loves icons. One will even be the feed icon on the feed tab. Cause that might help. Theres more, but thats enough for now. Go one breaking things and wishing and mocking and reverse engineering. Its fun :)
FOR THE RECORD... ahem. See, that writer was originally going to use the thread for general questions. Only people were asking questions here in this thread, so that writer wanted to be considerate and consolidate things here. Like the considerate person that she is. Because she is. Quite. As well as a FANTASTIC title writer. So it ended up being about just the one thing. The end.
And to clarify - wonky *is* the technical term :-)
Danny - there are still zeros all the way across ranking as "top users" - something is wrong with that thing LOL.
Not that I am obsessed with having friends or anything because I so am not, but when you click stalk someone, it says you successfully added them as a friend, only really, you didnt really. You only are successfully stalking them. And then, when someone is stalking you and you add them as a friend, you still have the stalk link for the person on the same page as the friend confirmation. I suppose you can stalk your friends... you know, in real life. You all would have seen these issues had you only tried to stalk me. Instead, I am a mad stalker on the loose. But only for the good of testing the site. Really. I am a stalking martyr, sacrificing and stalking for the greater good.
Im totally starting the rumor vanessa went to zillow to get better address data and become a better stalker
You think you have no friends Vanessa, Ha, look at me zip, zero. Oh, and I befriended you. I also tried to add a news story on bizarre searches and when I did the article heading did not link to the actual article at http://www.epiar.com/market-research-blog/2007/07/06/bizarre-searches-stranger-than-fiction/, but instead went to http://sphinn.com/out/1
BTW that story I submitted was under "Water Cooler" but it isnt there when I take a look under the "Other" category and "Watercooler"?
@graywolf - thats so not true. as far as you know. @ken - dude, I cant be friends with someone with no friends. How would that look? ;) BTW, now that I have logged in on a different computer, the front page claims this thread has 3 comments. Just sayin.
@ken - cause you have to click other, water cooler, then "Whats New"... @vanessfox - Im with gw :P
@sugarrae - the network page now sorts by default alphabetically by username. clicking on the column headers will resort by that var. @Ken - your category nav/searches follow you based on the story tab youve selected; and if you click to the other will sort that one based on the current selected category. To get back to seeing all categories for either hot or new topics - select "all categories" @Vfox - yeah, that stalker/stalkee/friends bug should have been in the known issues list Thanks to everyone - keen eyes!! Note we are reacting to feedback and doing some final cleanup, so things might look different from visit to visit during this process.
@sugarrae - ah yes, whats new. Thats what i was missing. @vanessa - yeah I understand you have to protect your rep. I understand if you can;t be my friend : ( But it still hurts deep. I did see you used my pic of you losing to MSN at the Rockm Sockm party on your twitter page...so I thought maybe Id get some love.
Oh ken. Im the kind of friend who takes and takes. Im not a giver.
Is it worth asking the Russian dude who bought sphin.com if you could buy that domain from him? Ummm... looking cool, and I like the approach overall. Im casting a vote away from threading of comments. Im an ancient Usenet newsgroup user, and reader of Slashdot, but I dont really like the threading because it looks clunky to me nowadays, and too many users mess up, posting their comments in the wrong branches. Surely youre going to really regret asking for comments, as this page grows hellishly long? ;-)
>>>who takes and takes So not gonna go there... :P
@Michelle - but the reputation values when sorted by reputation make no sense?
sent two invites both people say they never got there
More stuff... and not just about being a bad friend. If youre in a topic with no submissions, it says something like, heres the stories submitted by our members with a colon and then just blank space. It might be cool to instead of a blank space, have a message that says that no stories have yet been submitted with a link to the submission page. Of course this may not be a problem long term if you figure everything will always have submissions, but if you age articles and only show them for a certain number of days, then some less popular categories may sometimes be empty. So the navigation. When you click hot or new, no higher level topic is highlighted, but I think all categories is implied? So its the same as if you click all categories, then hot or new? And in that case the all categories is highlighted. Maybe that could be consistent? But then, you click a category, then you click hot... is it all hot or just hot for that category? Its not super clear. And I think part of why its confusing is that the hot and new tabs are not listed as part of the set of tabs that arent for navigating through the stories, but through other stuff on the site. I feel like there might be another way to position the hot and new to make them be better juxtaposed with the category links. But I dont know what that might be right now. But it sounds like the navigation stuff is still changing so maybe I can ponder more once its changed.
Me again. Once again with the stalking. When you add someone as a friend whos been stalking you, you end up on their profile page. And its difficult to navigate back to your own profile page that lists your stalkers. So, like if you were trying to add a bunch of people as friends, youd have to add one, see their profile, find your way back to your stalkers page, click again, etc. for each one. Perhaps checkboxes beside your stalkers so you could select multiple ones with a button for "add all selected as friends"?
Some quick comments. Were seriously pondering how to better make it clear the relationship between hot, new and categories. Ill come back to this in a bit. On some other things: Karma/Rep: It will change, does change. AntiVoting/Why Not Anti-Sphinn: bit concerned it might take time for people to understand that Sphinn means to vote, so sometimes I lean toward just saying vote. Will think this more ken, your article is in Water Cooler. Its new, so hit new, and youll see it. Its not hot because not enough people have voted for it. And thats clearly not intuitive to you, so Ill think about it more (though now weve shifted to saying Whats New, maybe that would have helped) The article heading DID link to the story, but not until you drilled down into hit here. In a place like Digg, article headings always take you out. Becasue we have discussions and articles, that seemed confusing. We could switch it around. Chris, youd raised this as well. So thoughts on that behavior, let us know.
OK folks, this is a quick and dirty dump of things we had internally and stuff gathered so far from the thread. Thanks so much for all the comments Prelaunch Changes (stuff we really want to solve before launch, though some things might not make it) Tabs: Hot Topics | Whats New | Submit Topics | Calendar | Feeds | SEL Tabs: Add icons, especially feed icon Modify Profile Page: Insert text at top of the page, just above the Upload Image box: "Enter information below that youd like to share with others who view your profile at Sphinn. Dont want to share? Just leave things blank. Nothing is required! For more about your profile, see the help page." Modify Profile Page: Birth month drop-down box doesnt stick to original selection Categories: Move "Other Online Marketing" subcategory to "Online Marketing" category rather than "Other" category. Sorry, my goof! Category Pages: add "no topics submitted" message if category is empty Profile Page: Improve relationship icons (waiting on new art) Network Page: Add search by last name option Calendar Page: Lose times, just have dates Calendar Page: Typo in title tag (Evemts) Calendar Page: Add country field Calendar Page: In List View, put title first, then date, location and description. Makes it clearly where to click for more info Story Summary: Remove JavaScript from submitters name and instead make hard link to submitters profile page Story Summary: Lose the Save Button (and possibly lose the Saved tab in user profiles -- its all confusing) Network Page: Says "Become a member" even if youre logged in. Confirm Submission: Modify button causes some people to lose descriptions, so add warning text ("The page you are trying to view contains POSTDATA that has expired from the cache.") URLs: Parent naming being removed (http://sphinn.com/category/SEO rather than http://sphinn.com/category/SEO&parent_name=Search%20Marketing) Feeds Page: Make feed icons two rows of five stretched horizontally. In near future, I may screenshot example of inbox and profile feeds. Comments: Add permalinks for individual comments Comments: Add time limit for how long these can be edited (lets start with 15 minutes, initially) Comments: Change "written by" to "written" ; "Rating" to "Votes" ; "Rate Comment" to "Vote:" ; shorten "Thank you for rating this comment" to "Youve Voted!" (shorter should help avoid some a line wrap problem reported in IE6). URLs: Renaming story (which anyone who submits can do) causes URL to change. Remove this admin ability? Bugs (theyre bugs -- we pretty much want to stomp them out and kill them) Discussions: Headline tries to jump you out to blank page Comment Counts: These dont match actual number of comments in various places and may be down to caching. Checking! Profile Page: Tabs in IE7 are screwy Comment Edit: "edit button for my comment above and this appeared above the main content area of the page: Warning: current(): Passed variable is not an array or object in /var/www/html/sp/sphinn.com/templates_c/c_6e9d47fca259527c18191d29afe6df5a.php on line 123" Profile Page: Keyboard tabbing wrong -- when editing your profile and are in the the company field it does not tab over to the title field next. Instead it tabs to the AIM. Spellcheck: In comments, might not be working Sphinn Button: Sometimes doesnt seem to indicate a vote has been cast (especially, apparently, if you havent reloaded a page). 403 For Long URL: Try this, see 403. Made Up Name Database Error: see this Inbox: Apparently it might not update quickly nor show the message on pages quickly. Postlaunch Changes (we can go live without this stuff and probably will, but then well try to do them soon after) Comments: Add HTML options, such as ability to bold, do lists, blockquote, embedded URLs preferably with buttons to help URLs: Modify before submitting, and a new entry is created, slapping a number against your URL -- this sucks, and wed like it to go away. Bury Feature: Enable if needed (help files prior to this will stress that yes, we do have moderation and editors). Also see if theres a way to show who buries something. Friends: Find way to show all stories submitted by your friends Feeds: Setup topic specific feeds Email Friend: Reenable this when were comfortable it wont contribute to spam Feeds: Is there a way to do autodiscovery for places where custom feeds are available? Unvote: Make button smart enough to remove your vote without forcing you to go to the Vote tab of your profile to do it Friend/Stalk Confirmations: Need to fix how it doesnt let you really know you friended or stalked someone (Not that I am obsessed with having friends or anything because I so am not, but when you click stalk someone, it says you successfully added them as a friend, only really, you didnt really. You only are successfully stalking them. And then, when someone is stalking you and you add them as a friend, you still have the stalk link for the person on the same page as the friend confirmation. I suppose you can stalk your friends... you know, in real life.) Add To Help (explanations are needed -- sure, well give you some) Editors & Moderation: We have them, we do it, its not purely voting, we will pull stuff if we decide to. Usernames: You cant have spaces or underscores in them. Made a mistake? Private message an admin for help. Content Guidelines: Topics should be related to search, search marketing and internet marketing. Water Cooler allows for some off-topic conversations of a light tone, but sorry, no politics because of moderation difficulties. Upset, offended by something? Contact a mod (and explain who they are, how to find them. Oh, and get some!). Network Page: What things mean (1. (pretending I havent watched it for three hours) Network Requests (things people have said theyd like added for the profile pages) PicasaWeb Tumblr Concerns (things were pondering, cause folks seem a bit confused) Upcoming Stories: People werent realizing that New Topics meant newly submitted and upcoming topics, so name change to Whats New and sort order changed to show newest first. Categories: People arent realizing we have places like the Jobs area or Water Cooler Profanity Filter: Do we need one? Category Bar: Add Submit link to far right (@rustybrick - I did originally look to the top right as trained, but the submit tab was pretty obvious when I realized it wasnt where I was trained to look.) Wishlist (if wishes were fishes wed have netted all this stuff already. instead, these are things well definitely do after launch and perhaps weeks down the line. but well try, if its a good wish) Threaded Comments: Some want nested comments (replies indented under person youre replying to). We cant do that right now. We might not want to do it at all, because we have concerns about how replies start to get narrower and narrower. Were sticking with a linear system for the time being and hoping adding things to the existing comments box like blockquoting might help. Feed Management: Maybe a way to pick various topic feeds you want and generate links for them on a page that you store, plus perhaps a corresponding way to mix them together? Username: Ability to change it (this will probably have to be a manual request thing, but help will clarify that you cant have spaces or certain characters in your username) Upload Picture: Way to make it automatically save after an upload? Voting: Find way to require actually reading a story before allowing a vote? Categories: Add Video/Podcasting category? Sphinn Button: Way to show if friends have voted? Profile Image: Force into standard square shapes, even if not square when uploaded? Comments: Shade or show comments that are new since last visit
Some more comments/recommendations from moi: - I suggest having reputation recalculate much more frequently for the first few days/weeks when you launch, since those numbers will be a lot more interesting to people when they first kick the tires. Being able to more rapidly see the effect of changes and input is rewarding to people. - Why is birthdate info included in the profile? I always avoid providing that kinda info from personal data security concerns - so Im just curious what youd want it for, even though its optional. - Provide a link to a form to submit questions or technical problems? Theres no contact method listed on the current Help page. If you do add a help/webmaster/support submission form, I suggest naming it "Report Problems to the Sphinn Doctor". :-) - Ugh - naughty, naughty -- need to canonicalize http://www.sphinn.com and http://sphinn.com. - Vanessa mentioned this, but Ill enhance: there are a number of places where avatar icons dont have ALT text, or where the ALT text is "avatar". Itd be cool to use the username as ALT. - When you officially launch, will you zero out all our comments and votes to start anew, or should we already be vigilant/careful in being professional on here? Just asking after seeing other folx comments - not worried about mine. - How about using the text, "Sphinn your vote!" - Spell check worked great for me, in IE browser. - Fun to add graphic image smilicons to comments.
Its not actually birthday -- look, its birth month and year. We wanted it for two reasons. First, its nice demographic info to have for those who want to voluntarily provide it (not required). Second, we might want to say happy birthday to people. Virtually every social site Ive seen asks for it -- and, asks for an exact date. I though it was a nice compromise to just ask for month, in case you want to do a happy birthday thing but not load yourself down with everyones very specific date. Form, good idea. Not planning to zero out comments, so act like its the real thing! Nice on Sphinn Your Vote, will consider that.
Back to the navigational confusion. Let me suggest this. We know there are issues, so hang off on suggestions now until we say. If youre confused, definitely ask! Well help you get going until we roll out a new structure. I cant show you what I have in mind (and my screenshot is bad anyway), but I think it will go like this (and if you can visualize it and want to comment on the new idea, then go ahead). Four tabs at the top: Topics | Calendar | Network | Feeds By default, Topics is selected, with All Categories below that selected: Topics | Calendar | Network | Feeds *All Categories* | Google | Yahoo | Microsoft | SEM .... Then within that area, youd see the category header and three tabs to the side of that: Hot Topics, Whats New and Greatest Hits. Keep imagining: Topics | Calendar | Network | Feeds *All Categories* | Google | Yahoo | Microsoft | SEM .... All Categories *Hot Topics* | Whats New | Greatest Hits ------------------------------------------------------------ Sort By Options..... Story 1 Story 2 Story 3 The screenshot mockup looks better, promise. But the idea is youre in the topics area, and you see whats hot across all categories. Want to see whats new but not necessarily hot? Thats Whats New. Want to see all the best stuff thats built over time? Greatest Hits, where all topics are sorted by popularity (in Whats Hot, only things recently popular show). You can also resort in greatest hits by date, so that serves as a type of everything display. Drill into a category, the navigation lights up and keeps you clear (hopefully). Jump to calendar or network, and the category links (no longer necessary) go away. Select topics, and you get the top level categories. By default
OK, now I see the Unvote message next to a button. Yeah, thats dumb. It should totally be Unsphinn. Or Desphinn. Or something.
>>>Karma/Rep: It will change, does change. And Ive watched it change. Its just borked. Im not claiming it doesnt change or that I dont see that it takes an insane amount of time to update. I do. It is simply borked. If you look at the rep order once you sort by rep, it makes no sense. Active members like vanessa, graywolf, me, demib - weve all lost rep points. But, then someone like rand, who has made one comment (with a rating of 1 - and come on, you know weve been playing with this ;-) and has spun two stories has gained a point. Some people with zeros across the board (meaning no comments, spins, nothing) have ten points. And some with zeros across the board have six points. Its off and Im just saying lol... you open a social media site with something called "reputation" and it isnt working on launch, youre gonna take heat for it. Also, rep should be real time or updated way way way more frequently. IMHO
So on the rep stuff, short answer is -- yeah, its weird. Dont worry about it for now. Dont worry? Yeah, because its not preventing you from submitting stories, voting on stories, commenting on stories, getting your stories to be popular. It should be logical. Dont get me wrong. All I can say right now is got it that it is weird, and Ill look at it more to see how to figure out whats going on so theres some explanation that makes sense. But Im going to poke at some of the other things first (comment counts, fixing the navigation), then will spin back to it hopefully before launch or have a please hang in there explanation for it.
Sphinn search algorithm Qs Would it be possible to give me options to get search results based on... # of sphinns high/low, low/high as well as those that are getting sphinned/sphunn at the fastest rate? by age of post limited to categories feed options for result Maybe an advanced search page with these and other options?
I just tried to send a message to Danny through his profile, and after submitting, the little popup box didnt close out -- the rest of the page stayed grayed out, and the message box content switched to my personal profile, leaving me no way to navigate out. I expect this mayve been because I was using IE browser (no, its not my preference to use it - I like Firefox, but I do a lot of testing/browsing because most users are still using it).
IT IS NOW 12:15PM EASTERN TIME AND WE ARE ABOUT TO BREAK MANY THINGS IN THE SITE, FOR ABOUT AN HOUR OR TWO. PLEASE HOLD COMMENTS UNTIL WE SAY WERE DONE BREAKING STUFF. CAUSE WHEN WERE DONE PUTTING IT BACK TOGETHER, YOU SHOULD BE HAPPIER. HANG IN THERE.
Found a small thing... Apostrophes are getting escaped with a backslash in the Modify Profile form. Every time I edit my profile, the Personal Blog Name gets another backslash. Currently it says: Stephan Spencer\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\s Scatterings Next time I edit that page, it will have a bunch more backslashes.
QUICK UPDATE -- STILL WORKING ON SOME THINGS. FEEL FREE TO KEEP USING THE SITE, SUBMIT, VOTE, ETC -- WILL LET YOU KNOW WHEN TO REALLY FIRE UP A ROUND OF COMMENTS ONCE WE FINISH THIS FIRST ROUND OF CHANGES. AND THEN ILL STOP USING CAPS, TOO :)
Looking for comments in a separate thread on a particular issue. Sphinn Headlines: Jump Out To Stories Or To Discussions? http://sphinn.com/SphinnZone/Sphinn-Headlines-Jump-Out-To-Stories-Or-To-Discussions/
OK, WERE TAKING THE SITE DOWN COMPLETELY FOR A BIT, BACK AS SOON AS WE CAN.
So reputation is now gone. Heres the deal. Reputation doesnt impact how you submit stories. Its designed to be a way to reward people who overall are active on the site -- commenting, voting, submitting, etc. And since its so funky, were just killing it for now. It may come back down the line. If so, well cover what it includes and gather feedback on how it should change.
