The dragons were keen to invest in an online diamond website’s potential due to its high search rankings in Google.

I was thinking about blogging this as well, half of the discussion was about natural rankings and search traffic, swaying the business pitch from down in the dumps to a tempting investment. Great to see SEO coming into the mindset of the Dragons, although they always seem a little naive when it comes to search traffic. The online poker/casino monitoring service made me cringe the most, knowing what it takes to secure sizeable online gaming revenue.

For our American friends - Dragons Den is similar to American Inventor, which was started by one of the Dragons, Peter Jones. The show is one of BBC’s most popular shows, especially amongst those interested in business.http://www.bbc.co.uk/dragonsden/

Holy shit, have you seen his site? diamondgeezer.comWhat’s going on with the text at the bottom?... "We have a wide range of Diamond Earrings, for him or her, in materials yellow or white gold, platinum or silver. Diamond Earrings bring out the true beauty of the stone, especially when set in gold, silver or platinum. In our Diamond Earrings we use the very best diamonds coupled with the most precious metals on earth, and that means an exquisite pair of Diamond Earrings. Take a look at our range of Diamond Earrings"One of yours, Rob?

LOL, I think they sell Diamond Earrings. Not one of mine, I would have stuck all of that into a marquee tag ;)

I had a look after the show and his site never did rank where he said it did!

It might have done at the time of the shows recordings - though who can tell. He certainly didn’t shine for me.

There’s quite an interesting review of the site just posted on e-consultancy: http://www.e-consultancy.com/news-blog/366072/would-you-buy-a-diamond-ring-from-this-website.html

This is crazy! But, if someone wants to pay me big bucks for search engine positioning, I’ll dig up a site for sale to get my share of the loot.

I have wondered before how much some particular rankings are worth. Certainly there are a lot of first page rankings that are worth a lot to the business who has them, but how do you put a value on that? None of the domain name reselling guides talk about rankings at all.

Ha! I missed this week’s episode, but recognised the style of writing from the paragraph Steven posted instantly. I am 99.999999% sure that is the work of a certain UK SEO agency that ranks very well for the term "SEO". Those repetitive, partially hidden paragraphs dumped at the bottom are a classic sign they’ve been there. I’m actually quite surprised that I hadn’t heard about this yet, it’s the kind of thing I’d expect them to send a press release out for immediately.Fair play to them though, if their work managed to help this guy get someone to invest a quarter million into his site, he’ll be one of their happy clients!

But then, looking at the rankings he claims he had, i can’t see any evidence of it. Wonder what happened there? Was he making up those rankings, or has he dropped since?

I dont see him ranking anywhere.  If someone is buying ranking placements in todays SERPs they have not done their homework on the industry or SE’s.

Hi, this IS Diamond Geezer as seen on Dragons’ Den July 28th 2008. What follows is a generic response which I hope brings clarity to a few issues raised in like articles and blogs.Note to reader: to be read in a light-hearted, playful, jocular mannerLoving your work.......please be sure that you know, WE KNOW we have SEO issues at this time. But first an appeal - come on guys: just because we have consistently failed to identify good SEO consultants DOES NOT make us bad people or dodgy dealers. What exactly has an SEO problem got to do with quality of product or service we sell and provide? Our walls are dripping with DTI awards for excellence, staff training awards, website design awards, jewellery design awards and our customer testimonials sparkle. Sadly no SEO award - the only service we buy in. I’m confused, surely as we have paid for all this work over the years, your industry has so far failed us: not the reverse. So having a pop at our pathetic SEO is a touch cannibalistic ;-). Can I also point out that Dragons’ Den wasn’t live, a minor point that seems to have been missed by some less polite and accusing SEO people on various blogs. It was recorded months ago and as I stated very clearly on screen, the positions quoted were ‘yesterday’ I.E the day before recording. Please do remember that we are DIAMOND experts not SEO experts and we do spend and it seems, waste, a lot of money within your industry in our quest that our SEO matches our quality of product and service. That means of course that if you have any criticisms about the SEO work on our site then please don’t forget it was done by one of your gang and in return we promise not to slag-off your jewellery ;-). Here’s where we are.....In position terms we did well last year [2007] and were holding top 5 positions by Christmas on important search words and phrases. Early into the New Year [2008] we started to tumble and by the time of the recording of Dragon’s Den were slipping onto second and third pages as is now well documented in the on screen reply to Dragon Peter Jones during the program. However as at the 30th July 2008, although we are holding positions on search engines other than Google, we have temporarily dropped off the Google radar, we’re being soft filtered. We now know that this was down to inappropriate actions by our last and now ex-SEO contractor and is being rectified by our current SEO experts. Even we accept that it will take some time to reverse, so now is not the time to judge their work. Dare I say........... ’Watch-this-Space’?I would like to share one small point of commercialism, a competitor with TWO sites that dominated the top Google positions through 2007 [no longer] turned over 1/3rd of the business that we did. Its not all about SEO and I hope our growth says a lot about the quality of our jewellery, service and brand reputation. I know, I know ’just think what will happen when our SEO problem is resolved’.Hey here’s an idea, walk don’t talk, why not show us your skills and expertise and risk make some money. We invite you to contact us professionally at http://www.diamondgeezer.com/sell2us and tender, however it’s probably not a good idea to start your pitch by insulting or berating a potential client or their website with liberal use of Anglo Saxon, as sadly, so many of your brethren have via email. And finally please remember the Dragons wanted in, I turned them down, they respected that the business was doing well and going places, INSPITE OF RUBBISH SEO. Your saw 13 minutes of pure TV, I had a very full on, fun but hard, 2 hour 10 minute business meeting surrounded by cameras and production crew. Search engine positions represented just a few minutes of that total time and therefore proportionately, did rather well in the edit and the broadcast......oh yes it is heavily edited.Thank you for your time.http://www.DiamondGeezer.com

Thanks for your input into this post, it’s always good to get both sides of the story rather than just what we’d seen on TV and your website. This was a light-hearted submission which caught our eye because of the TV exposure given to our industry. Just like with all professions (including jewellers), there are bad eggs in our industry who are either incompetent or looking for short-term wins. I’m sorry to hear of your bad experiences and hope that your new SEO consultants are able to fix the many issues outstanding on your site.

Slightly less actually ;-) but hey..............and this is a quote from another blog - ’remember PROFIT is after wages, bonuses, dividends and reinvestment. Shareholders of a family run company can opt to take ALL profits as dividends if they wish they have nothing to prove to anyone’. We haven’t done that but actually reinvested the heathy profits we have made over the last 5 years in our branding and systems, which is why our turnover has risen 10 fold in that 5 years. Remember Amazon made losses for 10 years while they positioned themselves, they were using other peoples’ money, we use our own. We may continue to do so or may take one of the many offers that have been delivered this week. We’ve a hell of a long way to go, however all we need now is some decent SEO it seems. And I’m sorry to disappoint guys but the 97 seconds you see the Dragons talking about SEO in the edited broadcast was the only reference to SEO for the entire 2 hours 10 minutes I was in the Den. We all know it should be more important.Best regardshttp://www.diamondgeezer.com

I am glad that DG posted here.***  we have paid for all this work over the years, your industry has so far failed us  ***Maybe now that will be the wake up call that certain people in this industry needed to hear - to finally realise that certain branches of SEO and certain SEO firms are seen by many other businesses in other sectors as shoddy operators and that it tars the whole industry with the same tainted brush.Looks like your previous efforts took the high risk route where you quickly got good positions and traffic, but then crashed and burnt your domain and its reputation in a matter of just a few months. Were you advised that the previous strategy was high risk, or did they just take your money and tell you that everything would be great?

Just saw the re-run of Dragon’s Den and must admit this had me jumping straight for Google.Good to see a post on Sphinn from DG himself. After a quick investigation i think your site is highly reparable although it would require quite a few changes.

>>>>Maybe now that will be the wake up call that certain people in this industry needed to hear - to finally realise that certain branches of SEO and certain SEO firms are seen by many other businesses in other sectors as shoddy operators and that it tars the whole industry with the same tainted brush.Hardly tarring the whole industry.  Or at least, justifiably.  Fully 95% or more of the people who claim to do SEO are either shysters or useless amateurs.    THAT’s why the industry has a bad name.  How many people doing SEO are still advertising ’we submit to 1000 search engines’? C’mon - it’s not a small minority of the industry.  There’s a LOT of people still doing that.
