This is fascinating stuff. Google Blogoscoped broke the story, and it will be really interesting to see how Google promotes this.

And from http://blog.radioactiveyak.com/2007/09/google-shared-stuff-social-bookmarking.html

It looks like they'll be building this in to all the Google services that allow sharing (Maps, Video, YouTube, Reader, Picasaweb, Blogger, ...), but at the moment it's only supported in Google Video and via a browser (Share This) button. This suggests this is the mysterious Mocka-Mocka social service suggested in the Google Reader training video that was leaked earlier this month.

From Blogoscoped: With Google tracking how often a link is shared and viewed, it will be interesting to see whether this data is used by their ranking algorithms, especially since users are asked to tag their shared items.

I would expect to see greater influence of social networks on the Google algorithm as people share already popular content.

I personally think it's inevitable that they'll use this info at the very least for discovery, like they do with blogs, but potentially for ranking popular pages higher than, dare I say, well-optimized pages.

Or there could be a piece of the algo that judges a site with rapid growth in links compared with a lack of growth in bookmarking to be flagged for potentially un-natural or paid link-building strategies.
