I have seen some huge gains in client sites just by adding the words "how to" to the UI.

Same here. I've had clients do well with "how to" content, even offline.

Very, very true. The articles beginning with "How To..." on my site are invariably among the most popular I have, despite being satirical or plainly ridiculous pastiches - such as "How to Win Arguments Online" or "How to Become a Superhero".

The keyword phrase 'how to become a superhero' is now one of my biggest drivers of search engine traffic, believe it or not! It's amazing what people look for with the phrase 'how to...'

Hitwise did some analysis on this recently in the UK and found 170,000 distinct 'how to' search terms: http://weblogs.hitwise.com/robin-goad/2008/07/how_to_save_money_in_a_recessi.html

This article hits home and is a wonderful idea in many aspects for all types of businesses, not just publishers. I've been involved a lot recently in creating and optimizing "how to" tip-like content for clients. Many of which who are sites selling products or services who are looking to gain additonal traffic by providing helpful and informative content to people looking for this type of information in their respective industry or niche, and not necessarily existing customers.
