I Sphunn this, but not because we're friends. I actually don't know you and I think your theory, while employed by a minority is wrong. In fact, that's why it's only embraced by a minority of people - voting only for people who vote for me isn't sustainable as a social media strategy, at least not on Sphinn.
On Digg, it happens, I'll give you that for sure. And you'll probably need to rely more heavily on your connections there and cultivate them before you get votes. Of course, that's doesn't mean they'll definitely vote for you, especially if your posts are crap. I'm not saying yours are -- I'm just saying that even among power Diggers, that reputation is built on their idea of a quality post.
There's a woman on here, named Tamar I think, who is a power Digger. If she just went around Digging all her friends posts, she's eventually run into the problem that her friends would have an off day. If she voted for a friend on an off content day, wouldn't that affect her rep, and cause people to stop following her?
More people would stay on the front page based on name recognition alone if that were the case. But most folks with triple my influence aren't getting triple the votes I do.
You've inspired me to write a post on this subject at my site tomorrow. I'll be linking to you and I hope you'll get Sphinns out of it. I think this issue needs to be addressed, and not just by the Sphinn community. Because if folks think this is how and why someone gets on the front page of most SB or SN sites, no wonder so many folks are failing at it.
Good reply. Link to me an send me a referrer visit and I'll link back. I never expected to see such a long reply here :) Thanks.
I didn't do Bookmarking online before but I expected something different. Just a structuring of data based on each person's beliefs. I don't ever follow people around. I don't need anyone to tell me who to Digg or Sphinn. And nobody should. Unfortunately that's the way things work and a great idea like these bookmarking sites that could turn into real search engines as they are human maintained crashed due to those gaming the system.
I don't use Digg anymore and I like Sphinn as there are people here that may understand my 'language'. Specialized bookmarking sites are the future but still, people should vote on value of content not reputation of poster or relationship between them.
PS:That happens in my ideal world:)
I'm mostly off Digg too - but that's not the way things work everywhere. Even if you're a loner, you can get attention without gaming the system, or even from using the system the way it was intended. I chose to link to both your page and the sphinn story yesterday before you said anything. And I don't want a link back. I don't want anything but for you to really think about changing sites instead of abandoning your whole SB project.
And take a look at StrredUp. Their algorithm, they say on their site, is set up to reward people's whose content is getting read. You might think about things like whether your message is targeted, and whether your content is really GREAT or just merely very good.
It's hard to think about, but after I realized that sometimes, my content Does leave something to be desired, it took some of the pressure off.
Because you can never tell what people are going to like. What you think is your crappiest writing, others might love because it was honest or true or funny. And what you believe to be a perfect content specimen might be technically wonderful, but not have that special something that makes it live beyond you.
So, hey, if you want to give up, sure, give up. But don't say it's because of the system.
Really take a look at what you're doing and how you're doing it. Social bookmarking works because of the "social" part to it - that's part of how it's Supposed to work.
But it's not the whole thing either.
If you aren't willing to take part, then fine... but if you think it's because of your friendships or lack thereof, you'll have a hard time getting your blog to take off because the concept applies to other things.
Online, no one does Anything alone. We all need alliances and leverage AND good content to succeed unless we already have money, in which case, just go buy the exposure you need.
Look at where your Sphinn article is today vs yesterday - that should be proof enough. Good luck!
Looks like the diggers like your story. It just made the front page.
