Whats the purpose of spending hours on building a Social Reputation if in the end the Social Network(s) you’ve chosen to target doesnt result in a sale of the product or service that you are probably promoting?

Interesting question. Id certainly say there some benefits other than a direct sale. For instance here on Sphinn youre gaining valuable information and you can build your reputation and earn the respect of others in the industry. While this may not result in someone calling me for a consulting job it will allow me to gain some exposure and increase any networking possibilities.
There is more potential than most realize. Early adopters in that industry (real estate) will likely benefit most. Keep moving forward and participate for the sake of participation, the universe will take care of the rest.
Im quite surprised there are not a whole load of commentors saying things like "Its not only about the money, if you dont give lots to the community you are not welcome". Those things are all obvious. For some reason a lot of people have a problem with addmiting (to themselves?) the real reasons why they are doing what they do.
All good comments so far but I wanted to address what you said Matt... Matt, I agree 100% that those that dont participate are not welcome. Social is the act of participation not withdrawl. I actually think those that dont participate will actually fade out over a natural period of time. A good observation to this would be how eager I was 5 - 6 years ago when I first dived into Internet Marketing. I had signed up for every newsletter and forum I could find. Today those accounts still exist but I only participate in a small handful. Five years ago our reputation building was through forums and for the fortunate handful through being writers for newsletters. While forums and newsletters still exist... boy how the times have changed!my $0.02
Take this from someone who used to be concerned only on ROI metrics and hours of investment VS. profits. Not in vain I started with Black Hat.Being ROI oriented is a good thing but take it to the extreme and you are being short sighted. Great enterprises come with the hand of passion and vision. You have to do things because you have fun doing them. You have to hand yourself out to the greater good of delivering with passion otherwise you are just one more ugly little piece of the system.OK getting down of the soapbox now :-)
