Questions On Sorting
OK, just one question so far, but I might have mor later! I'm a questioning kind of person by nature.
I can see hot topics and new topics, but what if I want to topics that are neither new nor hot? Is that just the "All category" link on the higher level menu? It almost seems like that should be a tab as well, but maybe I'm just lame and non-observing.
Hmm... it seems to disappear when you go to submit topic and then click "start discussion", btw.
PS. It's very pretty!

Well. Well. Well.... so look over at the right hand side of a page, just above the ads -- you'll see options to narrow to day, week or month. So you can see things that aren't necessarily new (just submitted) or hot (voted popular).
It's on my list to explain this more in the help pages. Guess I'll write that up soon!
Is that more to the functionality you wanted?
Ah, but I don't see that in the default view, only once I've drilled in to a tab or category. If you gave it to me at first, then perhaps yes, it would be what I wanted. :)
Maybe I'm still confused. All categories is filtered by hot or new. You can't see old and cold?
Huh. I clicked on the title in IE and it gave me this:
http://sphinn.com/out/1
which was a blank page.
Works over here though.
I was thinking that hot topics and new topics are navigation like the higher-level menu, unlike the other tabs... almost like the higher-level tabs are subtabs of those. Somehow. But I don't know how that work work cleanly.
Ok, so, I clicked on the all categories tab and then clicked on month: http://sphinn.com/published/month/category/AllCategories and you'll see that it is not showing me new/hot/everything submitted this month in all categories - it is only showing me hot. Vanessa I believe wanted a way to see all storys submitted this week or this month whether they were hot, new, google category or whatever.
More questions in my personal thread here... is the ordering of new topics random? Just to mess with me? What? I feel like it should be in the order of newest first. But it feels random.
Also, the topic listed in hot is not also listed in new. Does it leave new once it becomes hot?
Hey V - glad you like the look! I think it's purdy too... but I see the nav is confusing so we either need to make it less so, or really work up some documentation on it ;-)
Hot Topics are those that have 'made it' to the front page - published topics - whereas 'New Topics' are still waiting in the wings - hoping to be lucky enough to get asked to the front page dance....queued or unpublished topics actually.
From the New Topics tab you can sort by Oldest and Newest - we removed the "Least Popular" option, because that just didn't seem nice.
All categories is the default view for both tabs (Hot and New) once a tab is selected, you can drill into categories...or you can select a category then a tab and it will sort. Do you think it would be helpful for the default tabs to have headers above the listsings that say "All Categories"??
New Topics and Hot Topics are both sorted by activity - not by votes or timestamp. So you might see things farther down the page that have more votes or are more recent, if an older article gets commented on or Sphunn. As for all topics/all categories sort - yeah, it doesn't do that right now ;-) We'd have to add a tab - maybe call it "All Topics" and it would have all topics (published or unpublished...hot or not i guess we'd say)? Is that what you're looking for?
Yeah, that latter that you describe is what I'm looking for. A list of all topics, hot or not. :)
