I have been asked countless times how to get included in the Google “One Box”. That’s when there used to be a “one-box”. Now we have Google Universal Search results. They contain listings from Google Products, Google News, Google Images, Videos, etc. Getting included in Google News can drive a ton of traffic. But, Google News isn’t for every website or business strategy.

Some of these tips are good common sense, but following them is not a guarantee of good placement on Google News. The secret sauce encompasses more factors than the author has listed.

A quick spot check of tonight’s Google news shows several news sources with URLs that do not match the stated "must have" items. I double checked my free copy of Website Magazine and it says the exact same thing this post says... Must be a Google glitch.

Hi,I am Milind Mody, author of this article in Website Magazine. ilamontI agree that there is no guarantee for good placement. But I have been able to get many websites listed on Google News and these guidelines are based on my personal experience - after interacting with Google News Editors.johnandrewsCan you give some examples ? Sometimes rules are applied strictly to smaller or unknown organizations, whereas bigger organizations can sometimes bypass them.

@eBrandz: I don’t think it would be too much to ask you, the researcher, to spot check the Google News listings for "some examples". That’s all I did, one time, and I saw a few that didn’t meet your listed criteria.

johnandrews, yes its a reasonable expectation :)The three most important criteria to get listed with Google News are:-1) Original Content2) Multiple Authors3) Organizational Structure. While 1 and 2 are pretty obvious, big or known news sources can get in without 3). But if you are a small organization and you submit your website to Google News, the editors will most probably ask for organizational structure. It happened to me when I submitted my first website. In fact I was asked to create a page which gave this information as also names of reporters and editors (with their contact information). Hence in the 10 tips section, tip 4 deals with About us and Contact us pages.Apart from these 3 main rules there are a few important technical guidelines regarding article urls. These guidelines are published by Google at http://www.google.com/support/news_pub/bin/answer.py?answer=68323&topic=11665 .All remaining tips are based on my experience. But the way things keep changing at Google, I will not be surprised if they keep changing the rules to get "in".I would highly recommend publishers to keep an eye on their technical requirements page :-http://www.google.com/support/news_pub/bin/topic.py?topic=11665

The Google News algorithm takes far more factors into account than what the author has listed here, and many of them are not revealed to publishers.
