Actually there is a new better way for this kind of research: Majestic-SEO - we build this index from actual crawling (many tens of billions of pages) and in many cases it has more backlinks than Yahoo claims to have (yet alone shows). Additionally we also have anchor text and it is possible to check millions of backlinks for competitor sites - in September 2008 we will make a huge update of the index and after that I expect to beat Yahoo claimed quantities of backlinks for vast majority of queries (we already beat them for many urls).
