Good post. I would have to agree. I spend a lot of my day chasing some really cool metrics, but at the end of the day there are only a few that really matter. I like the big analytics tools. I think they offer great information and are useful, most of the time. Ultimately it is about what is best for your company and/or clients.
It's also critical that you don't show the client anything that they don't need to know. I'm not talking about "bad" information, but more the gee-whiz stuff I used to put in because I thought it might be interesting. Clients have an amazing ability to find irrelevant detail and ask questions that take a long time to answer, thus losing the impact of what it is you wanted to actually get across. Or their eyes just glaze over.
The advice to stick to statistics that are important to the business model is solid.
