I recently went through the list of directories listed in the Aviva Directories Blog which used the SEOMoz’s Trifecta to rank quality directories. I then began to wonder if any big name organizations use SEO directories or if its all small web sites trying to break the surface.

Does Overstock, Walmart, or Target use any of the directories on the list besides Dmoz.org or Dir.Yahoo.com?

The best way to find out is to go to the specific directory and search for the larger names.  I know we submit stuff to various directories depending on the client, but I suspect you’ll find the larger organizations already rank well in search results, and unless there is a specific niche directory that they want to be a part of, they don’t have a need to belong to every small directory out there.

I know quite a few large companies who pay to be listed in search directories. So it’s fairly safe to assume that: if the companies keep paying every year to be listed, they must be seeing some results.

There’s a handful of directories that are worth the time, especially for new sites with no links. IMHO, 99.9% of directories aren’t worth bothering with.I would not necessarily follow what big companies are doing since plenty of big companies just don’t get search or are employing obsolete seo strategies. I seriously doubt they get significant traffic from any directories (I know none of my personal or work sites do) and it’s pretty difficult to guage their value in terms of link juice.

I didn’t think most of the directories would drive any traffic but I though incrementally they would help with SEO.  I’m starting to think that registering would do more harm then good.  I’m finding it difficult to find other large organizations with links in directories because most directories allow you to use a keyword phrase.  Does anyone know a better technique to find a link to a competitor from a directory?  Will Yahoo Site Explorer work?
