The Yellow Page industry is incredibly easy-to-understand - you pay more, you get a bigger ad, you get more calls. Search engine optimization, even for the rare small business owner who has heard of it, is much more complicated and is inherently somewhat opaque.

Good post - ’snake oil SEO’ (what a great phrase!) companies, however you define them, are ruining the industry for us all, but you can see why some struggling retailers out there are clammering to buy their services (I’m director of a retail business as well so have had the inevitable dodgy submission sales calls!)... If I was in their position, knew nothing about SEO and could see the trend towards visibility on the ’web being of utmost importance, I’d probably be wanting their services as well!
