Danny, there's lots of quality content hidden on the sites of SEOs that gets little attention. You sure you want to limit Sphinn to just news? That leaves pretty much all the content that is on the homepage off Sphinn.

By news, I mean something current that's happened on a news site, a blog or sure, new content that isn't news or a blog post but something fresh.

This is nice content, but no, we don't really want things from a few months ago (and that were probably seen by many people) crowding out new material.
