This post is yet another great reminder of the necessity of building the website for the target market that are its VISITORS...not for the ego boost that comes from having a "pretty website" that doesn't offer any truly useful information or forces visitors to work too hard to find it.

That said, every target audience is different, as is the usability factor that applies to it.  A site selling high-tech products with a targets market of advanced Internet users better have a site that is dynamic and impressively designed, as well as easy to navigate and informative.  On the flip side, a site selling hunting gear, better make it really easy for hunters to find the products they're in search of.  That target audience isn't as likely to care as much about how "pretty" the site is.  To them, it's more that they found the information fast, the site had the products they needed and they got the deer piss and tree stand they were looking for.
