"Hamlet is at it again with another original tip."
ummmm. no.
Errr, create widget, submit to directories?
And I bet I could turn that into super black hat fairly quickly.
1. Create dating calendar widget or I mean "software", googlebomb competitor with irrelevant anchor text, rinse, repeat.
2. Create 500 different "geo-targeted" versions of the same widget, auto-submit to all directories.
Good point MadHat, its funny because I actually first read of this technique on a blackhat site about 6-7 months ago.
makes ya wonder.... hmmmmmmm
Yep we've been doing this one for years. You need to get a copy of Promosoft (http://www.develab.net/) which will automate the PAD submission process and allow you to quickly re-release new versions (extra features/bug fixes).
The best plan here is to create something that your site users would actually find useful. For example, a paintball site might give away a small mobilephone program that allows users to calculate paintball gun settings and distance. That way you get the community advantage + a greater chance of relevant IBL from authority sites in your niche. It can then be used for general link building beyond PAD submissions.
It isn't hard to build these apps in Java or Delphi. Don't try with screensavers or toolbars though, these have been done to death by now and don't get accepted by the quality directories (yes they do realise you can knock one up at conduit in 5 mins).
Heck, this method of promoting new software has actually been around longer than SEO itself!
It may not be a new idea but for someone not in the software game it's definitely an idea they may not be aware of doing and is worth investigating as a promotional aid.
LOL. @streko @IncrediBILLÂ
I guess I need to frequent black hat sites more often :-) I discovered this when I was trying to promote my own software on download sites. I'm sure a lot of people are not aware of this technique.
