One more tip, don’t put a video on youtube of yourself speaking at Columbia University.

Even bad reputation can turn into good rankings.  I’d love it if 1,000 people would link to my blog using "search engine marketing n00b" ;-)...Please do!!

Good point pedersen! The word n00b is irrelevant because potential clients won’t be searching for services using that term. So the other 3 words in your link text will help your rankings on the good terms.

Pedersen, That would be fine in the example you gave, but that’s just anchor text pointing to your official site. What if 1,000 people linked to: www.cnn.com/2007/9/YourName_Arrested_for_Child_Murder It would look really, really bad for your person brand! The problem with Video Professor and other reputation management cases isn’t a problem with their site..., it’s that negative, critical articles gained visibility in the SERPs... and with their lawsuit catching the attention of the Digg community and the newspapers, the negative pages are getting even more strength.

As long as it links to my own site using "search engine marketing n00b arrested for child murder", I am happy ;-)

sure... I gotcha....but people have a problem with online reputation management not linking your site... it’s usually because people are lnking to other sites that say something bad about you... Critical reviews, Kobe Bryant news stories, people slamming Microsoft’s new product, etc..

Yes and there are childish people out there whose cowardice drives them to anonymously publish things like "dumbass" google bombs. On the one hand if you just agree with everyone you’re said to add no value to the conversation, yet if you express opinions you will make enemies.

Here’s a big point: Don’t assume the problem, no matter what it is, is so small or insignificant that it will go away on it’s own. From my own experience, not addressing problems at all can often hurt your reputation, depending on who your dealing with. Word.
