Think Eyetracking recently completed an eyetracking study and compared it with an eyetracking study they did in 2005 for people looking at a Google search results page. Google has become the 8000 pound search Gorilla. During their meteoric growth there has been a trend that people’s expectations have gotten higher and their attention span shorter.

Anybody finding better results at #10 on first page vs. say #7, 8, or 9?

Thats quite the behavioral change. I would love to see the details of the study, particularly who was chosen to partisipate.

A really worthwhile article, just for the 2 images alone.

I'd like to see a study of this done, not on average Joe, but on SEOs. I frequently go beyond page 1 in my searches prior to modifying queries, aware as I am that the best content is not always able to compete with the link buying power of the top ranked companies. I wonder what an eyetracking study of industry-only folks would look like.

I go past the first page only when modifing the term doesn't get me anywhere, but that is only because past page 2 or so there is nothing but spam. Moslty though I always find something in the first three. It is rare that I have to change my terms.

Here is a great tip. If you are position one for a long tail keyword with no competition you can add sales by buying Google adwords. Try it. It increases your exposure. Think of it as a big billboard where you can promote sales.

Nice study, but I think Avinash has a very valid point in the comments when it comes to making conclusions without taking in account the methodology and the sample size.

Besides that I think search engine listings should not be a KPI for measuring the succes of SEO. I just wrote an article about that at Yoast.com “Measuring SEO: why rankings are worthless”:

Thanks for sharing this nice article...I just hope that aside from raking #1 in Google...site owners should think first of providing great contents to their readers.
