Google says they'll anonymize IP addresses on our server logs after 9 months significantly shortening the previous 18-month retention policy to address regulatory concerns and to take another step to improve privacy for our users.

In the details it says they found a way to get the "utility" out of the data without saving the IP past 9 months... so in other words, IP isn't so important because they have another way to track you. That's not quite the same as "another step to improve the privacy of our users" and we could use more transparency about tracking and privacy.
