quite surprised no one has chimed in on this yet, perhaps because most are tired of repeating the same points over and over again.
@BeantownSEOI agree the mentioned metrics to measure the succes of SEO arent never showed before. But I think to many people still worry about rankings although it means pretty much nothing measuring SEO succes
yeah yeah yeah but whats our ranking today? Did it change? Why are we down one, and can you fix it?
@johnandrewsGreat comment, John! :) Thats exactly what you get when you (and more important your clients!) worry about rankings
@eduardblacquiere Like anything with a Rank or Grade their is competition to be better than someone else. I am one of those people who check regularly to see what my "Grade" is to in order to do better on my site. It also gives you a sense of accomplishment when you succeed and a kick in the pants when you are down. Just my opinion
When youre checking your rankings every single day, thats a huge waste of time, but knowing where you rank for the right keywords is important. How else are you gonna know what you should be creating content for or putting focus on. Traffic is important, but rankings push that traffic.
Just so you know, they didnt block the web positioning checker - they just changed their font tags so the parsers didnt pick them up. Easy fix, takes about 2 minutes.
If you are a blogger, newspaper, or online magazine rankings might not be a #1 priority, but for small sites especially B2B the difference between #45 (or not tracking ranking at all) and #1 in traffic will be huge. Plus for smaller sites not doing much else, SEO is the only way to get traffic online. I dont think a majoirty of people can totally discount rankings. And if you consult and dont have access to analytics how else would you prove your work?
I have to admit that ranking is not really worthless...for me, it is still important but its the only thing that matters in knowing if my sites are doing fine.
